I have the version with 4 already built 4TB hard drives. Before I had my data (movies, photos, music and programs) decentralized on multiple disks. The centralized solution with network storage I had years ago before being considered but then rejected for cost reasons. As for what network technology I have only basic knowledge and was therefore glad to be found already a preconfigured NAS. Tentatively I once pulled a plate before commissioning. This is very easy and the installed WD Red hard drives are considered to be very reliable and suitable for continuous use. At start-up the fan makes powerful racket, but then also in hours of continuous use barely perceptible. Audible only the write and read noise of the hard drives. Commissioning is actually a no-brainer but a little more guidance than the Quick Installation Guide I would have been desired. There is only one picture where power cord and network cable are connected and enter the address for the browser to the, but clearly designed, user interface. The device is offered as a business solution for small businesses. Therefore, there are 2 telephone lines as is common in professional servers. However, only one power supply. Furthermore, there are USB ports (2x3.0, 1x2.0) and to a second network connection to make a memory expansion. I have decided not to torment me through the downloadable english manual and rather fed the NAS to my data. In the folder Public (release for all users) there are subfolders movies, music and photos. That fits! The location was so obvious, but I've made several errors here all went at the expense of speed: My USB 3.0 disk I plugged directly to the device, assuming thus to have the fastest data transfer. The copy job I have given over the notebook via WLAN and there saw the speed: 5-6 MB / s that would Taaage lasted even though I have the fastest wireless standard AC and the notebook stating a transmission rate of 300 Mbit / s. The right way is to connect the notebook with Gigabit LAN cable to the router. Files located there, were transferred with 105 MB / s. So it should be, with a 3.0 drive off with 80-95 MB / s. You can increase the speed by WLAN by one goes closer to the router. Download WLAN 12-15 MB / s, upload to the 10. If I liked fast, but I can live with. Access to the files via Win7 computer was not a problem. Streaming movies on the Samsung Smart TV not. Play the music files on the AV receiver also did not go. Both are connected via Gigabit PowerLan adapter to the router. The solution I found on the Internet: Enable the DLNA Media Server on the user interface via Settings / media and the WD My Cloud appears on all devices. Full HD movies with DTS HD Master audio are transferred smoothly even with simultaneous upload. I recommend to use a streaming box to send the sound to the AV receiver and the picture on the TV. (Ellion Labo-110 is my favorite because of the continuously variable zoom. WD TV Live has beautiful thumbnails) My TV has denied playing in some formats. Also playing videos on the iPad Air is difficult. I have it (player xtreme and AcePlayer) tried playing with two apps, here loads the file forever, chopping while playing. I suspect that the app accesses via the Internet, unfortunately, very slow and not only over the local network.
Conclusion: For me, well suited however the price should even go down and the speed could be faster. A German manual should not be a problem for a global company like WD. I forgive 4.5 stars.
