If the print quality:

For example, the color appears black little tired and contrast. This is, however, that the printer is set by default to thrift. If you change the settings before printing and selects the next best quality, you also get rich black.

Color:
Again, depending on the paper type and objective to find by trial an appropriate setting. Then the results are satisfactory. And they must not be as good as with a special photo printers. (You can save your own presets in the printer.)

Software:

The malaise of the containment mechanism is not taken very seriously here. S *** happens. But to return the printer would be a disproportionate effort. AMAZON may find a solution. Perhaps they send over a Brother service technician who fixes the defect. Otherwise the Brother Customer Service for advice is questioned times. In any case we need the device here only once to print our individual Christmas cards and in time to be able to submit. That now seems more important.

Included with the printer is a set was "5 XL cartridges compatible for Brother ... with chip and level indicator" for EUR 17.90 ordered. Because initially the starter cartridges are installed, is still pending whether expectations are met in the compatible cartridges or not. In any case, genuine Brother ink cartridges appear ago the price as an imposition.
