By not revealing anything we can consider that it is the psychological novel of the cycle, or melancholy, regret and the harmful effects of "culture" on people having nothing requested is best treated.
The characters are also very original physical and psychological sense, and particularly well treated.

The main hero is not haunted his past deeds and "culture" in taking a big hit.

The humor of Banks is still there of course, but melancholy prevails in favor of a work which leaves to think about when the evils of war and the idea that people want to be like their way of thinking and understanding of the universe.

Ps: this book being the fifth cycle, even if the narratives do not follow, it may be preferable to attack this book read by having at least one or two novels of the "cycle of the crop" or better all, you will not regret it ...
