This pitch is not without reminding you someting? While Cinderella was not mechanic, the story is reminiscent us this tale of our childhood. Indeed, this first volume of Lunar Chronicles: Cinder by Marissa Meyer, is a modernized rewrite of Cinderella tale. And as you say that rewrites stories and me, it makes sparks of happiness !!
I can not tell if this is the pen of the author, or the character itself, but I was spellbound from the first chapter! We discover our Cinder few moments before the Prince arrived in his shop. An encounter that will change his life forever ... But it is still far from suspecting that his life will end up upside down in no time! Cinder was immediately pleased. His life is far from rosy, and is often very unfair with her, but she does not complain. In appearance, she accepts without flinching slander and whims of his stepmother, as they may prove incredibly ... bitch! But we feel that Cinder end, it supports the most! She protested but she still sometimes pay the consequences of his pseudo-rebellion. It made me sad to see so much injustice! At one point, I was on the verge of swinging the book so that Cinder suffered was unfair! It's a very endearing, courageous and loyal character. In short, a character to which I immediately attached!
The secondary characters are not outdone. Prince Kai loved it and Peony, little sister Cinder. As for Adri, it made me much pity I hated her!
The story starts strong and connects directly twists, secrets do not unveil mysteries, treachery and a few revelations. The strongest point of the novel is very predictable but that does not stop me to love this novel! There are so many other things to sides, so much stress and twists that you can not let go of the book!
It is divided into three parts, three books, with a quote from the real Cinderella. I also found the Cinderella side was obvious throughout the novel. At the beginning and towards the end, yes, but otherwise, I really felt not to have a remake of the fairy tale. The author has a very mesmerizing writing that makes it all the more captivating novel. I was surprised by the choice of the author to compile history in Asia but I liked (although I never imagined the hero with slanted eyes but with a totally American / European physics) .
Although this novel is classified as SF, and this side frightens many readers, I want to reassure everyone on this. I do not like the pure and hard SF and I LOVE this book in which a lover of SF to the Star Wars definitely not find his account. Otherwise the terms "Hover", "Cyborg", "Android" ... the SF side remains very limited. There is even a dystopian side that I liked! But again, this novel is not even dystopia if he takes a few elements.
What can we conclude?
This novel was a heart for me, a great discovery as I would like to have more often. I was spellbound by the characters and the pen of the author. Although the biggest part of the story is predictable, the author manages to surprise us with twists and actions. A novel that deserves to be discovered, with his little Cinderella side that I liked but not too far either. The author has certainly inspired the tale, but the interior remains completely different.
In short, go ahead and go for discovering this book! Do not stop at the SF side because it is not a hard-SF novel, but a captivating futuristic adventure!
