Gap dimensions (eg narrow gaps between the aluminum frame and plastic or screen and frame):
-> If there is a very slight gap only and it bothers you not big, you can also stay in your device. If the gap is, however, quite far, so for example a sheet of paper can be inserted or tapering of the gap when pressed on the housing, then I advise to replace the device.

wrong built components (display angle or projecting on the side, camera stands out clearly, no smooth transition between the display and metal frame)
-> Depending on how pronounced the distances or displacements are everybody has to decide for itself whether it bothers him. But a perfectly crafted device has only smooth transitions and superbly finished lines. A transition from screen to metal speaker above or below should be barely noticeable in the optimal case.
TEST: run your fingers on the device
SOLUTION: Replace the device
Pixel errors (single or multiple pixels that do not change their color or can not change the brightness, for example, light up continuously glaring)
-> This is probably disturb everyone: a single pixel, the lights glaring purple whatever the brightness or just displayed image.
TEST: Pixel errors can be seen normally immediately, otherwise the free app Dead Pixel Detect and Fix from the PlayStore download (there may still be other apps) and the screen can light up in different colors to identify defective pixels better
SOLUTION: the aforementioned APP can be hide defective pixels permanently if this does not work is only the replacement of the device.
Discoloration of the plastic (only white version, mostly yellowish discoloration from the outset on the white plastic frame - not use!)
-> Discoloration on the housing do not look nice, but of course, everyone has to decide for himself. The white HTC One is not, moreover snow-white plastic, but a slightly darker white.
TEST: See under bright light, the plastic parts
Solution: If a cleaning does not help with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, comes only exchange in question
dull or matte display (display with very low brightness and no clear white, but almost as a beige lightest color)
-> Only occurs very rarely, but may not be.
TEST: go for a comparison with a qualified electrician your local dealer or a separate device with product photos from the Internet to compare. The HTC One really has a very bright and white display
Solution: Replace the device
rushing and / or crackling speakers (with quiet songs or videos is a slight noise heard in rapid change of tone or short sounds a cracking of the speakers)
-> Very many devices have this defect, also all 4 that I could test. The noise is usually also listen through headphones and cracking often comes to short tones as notifications or in videos, particularly in the YouTube app. It is not yet clear if this is a software or hardware problem, probably it is due to the built-up capacitors. Anyway, the first software to reduce the problem with the noise update from HTC (1.29.401.12) for virtually all devices.
TEST: quiet music dress, lowest volume control and the device to your ear keep close = noise
If you have never perceived cracking, you get the perfect piano app from the Play Goals and run your fingers quickly back and forth. The fast change of tone is a clearly audible cracking with defective devices.
SOLUTION: Against the noise definitely help the update of HTC but also Beats Audio off. It is supposed to help but also NFC off.
Plastic frame is from or "missing" (mostly lack the curves on the side a bit of plastic, but sometimes also in other places, rare is the plastic frame over)
-> Very common processing error, but in principle, not so bad if it moderate. Everyone needs to make for themselves.
TEST: swipe through the pages, you can feel if something is missing in part the sharp metal edge of the aluminum. But even with the eye can be partly clearly see that something about or is absent.
SOLUTION: Replace the device
Proximity sensor or other sensors do not work (difficulties in everyday life can be seen)
-> There are occasional defective proximity sensors or any problems with other sensors.
TEST: the app Andriod sensor box from the PlayStore recognizes all sensors and lets you test this.
SOLUTION: Replace the device
Defective vibration motor (no possibility of comparison difficult to detect)
-> Except that the vibration does not work at first or violently rattles / rattles (both only in exceptional cases), there are devices that are only slightly defective and only minimal sound different / feel as proper devices.
TEST: go for a comparison with an electronics retailer you trust and compare with the local test equipment vibration.
SOLUTION: Replace the device
Note: Even if it comes across here as it appears to many defects and problems are, the HTC One is generally trouble-free and great smartphone. Only the outer processing problems such as gaps or missing plastic and the little problems the speakers are more or less visible / audible at more than 50% of all devices. And workmanship there are any other major manufacturers also. Incidentally, I think that HTC will have overcome the time the defective product inspection and initial difficulties.
So if you have not received a proper device, inform yourself about solutions or swap the device around, it's worth it!
