I ordered the cable to avoid having to constantly open the cover of my Z3.
After the LED flickered I contacted the dealer. Two days later I got a new cable for free as a replacement sent.
This works fine.
Sure you can the cell phone during charging not as usual use as otherwise the magnetic connection is broken.

Since I anyway charging my phone only at night, that does not matter for me.
The LED is really bright for people who want to have it dark at night is not recommended to load it in the bedroom ...
