The problem:
If you adjust the lens at 24 mm in the long-range one, so it is out of focus at close range. By changing the focal length to shorter values, this also leads to a focus shift. At 14 mm in the vicinity there is nothing sharp to recognize. In addition to me, that the optics is probably not properly centered. Even in Live View mode, the left side is less sharp than the right side. If the optics hits, then it is sharp. Unfortunately, that's not too often the case. For this, the fine adjustment is no longer sufficient to adjust the optics. Even if, then it would not be possible to use them, because for each focal length other values are required.
If you look at the Web, then you will find out quickly that it is not an isolated case, but a known issue. It is not clear why there is such a large variation within a series and why the service does not resolve the error. The tolerances defined by Nikon are not transparent to me and the fact that I have to prove the errors in detail, can trust in company more and more recede. I admit Nikon one last attempt and I will then turn to Amazon. I come not go on, I will strive for a legal clarification. Ungern I want to use a defective lens. But the purchase price is much too high.
By the way, I use a number of other strong light Nikon AF-S zoom and prime lenses, all of which were reviewed by the Nikon service. The 14-24 is not the only objective, which causes problems. The advertising promises are for me in stark contrast to the experience that I have made in recent years with Nikon. And I was always faithful to the brand. For six months now I have a Leica M 240 and a Canon 6D with TSE 24 and TSE 17 all manual lenses that inspire me. These camera systems provide at least focusing screens or systems with which man is able to focus also on the small screen. With the D800 and D610 which is virtually impossible with the problems described above.
*** Update
Without the witty comment (see below) I almost forgot the review. So it has actually caused something good.
After my camera and the optics were several times when Nikon, the error at the end but were found and eliminated. Now the camera (D800) or the lens are super set and provide in connection with the 14-24 and clear shots. The visuals are really as good as it many claim. There is no longer anything to criticize. Nevertheless, I almost do not use the optics. The Leica M is simply overwhelming in combination with the M-optics. The focus from open aperture, the micro-contrast and beautiful neutral presentation of the colors are simply superior to Nikon. The images are much more appealing and I have to reprocess less. However, the biggest advantage is the weight and dimensions of the Leica. Had problems with the Nikon not occurred I would have never made the experience well. In this respect, everything has its positive side.
I will lift up the review of three stars. The lens is a very good zoom lens and probably the best wide-angle zoom on the market. Unfortunately, it took me a lot of time and effort. Therefore, there is no five star.
