The network is still completely empty of reviews. So Here are a few first impressions (more to follow), rating compared to the "L": + (Practical) Silent AF + (Practical) Silent IS + 150 g lighter +4 Vs. 3 Stops IS + 200-400 cheaper (depending on whether you have to "white box" compares) + Reduced close range (40cm instead of 45cm -> thus significantly better magnification of 0.3 vs. 0.23) o slightly lower volume (but not worth mentioning) o instanter autofocus. No comparative example for EF 40 STM. Absolutely equal to "L" o Similar vignetting, but by "Lens Profiles" in-camera (eg when the 6d 5d) well compensated o Manual Focus "by wire" (STM) acts much the same as a normal manual focus. Easy to operate - No distance display for focus - Aperture quickly lower: 3.5 (24), 4 (- At 105mm, the lens is still about 1 cm longer than the "L" (both go out) - No lens hood and lens pouch - No sealing (dust, splash water) - "Look and feel" something more sober than the noble "L"
The picture quality seems to have exactly the same in the first tests. The objective is above all in the center very sharp. Follow further tests.
Overall, this lens probably speaks to a rather different audience than the L, regardless of the price. Those like me who look for super image quality, coupled with light weight and super STM engine will be well served with the lens (regardless that it's cheaper).
