I ordered out of curiosity a can. Previously, I had seen a few videos on YouTube, where some people have tried the fish and then vomited the soul from the body. But since it is a Swedish national dish and I think you should "treat" national dishes also with a certain respect, did not come to me as a "test of courage" in question. I wanted to actually eat it as it is common in Sweden. With bread, potatoes, onions, tomatoes and cheese. Hab then opened the can outdoors in a bucket full of water and rinse the fish pieces with water, then sealed in a box and discarded the rest. I have to say to smell: Yes, it's true, it really smells anything but pleasant! It is a mixture of rotten onions and fish, stored in at least one tonne of salt. But you do not need breathing mask and must pass one also not, except perhaps if you eat the fish straight from the can, as do some jokers in YouTube videos. A Swede would not do something more. I had placed me a piece of fish on a crisp bread, along with cheese and potatoes. My verdict: the fish smells much worse than it looks, and it looks a lot worse off than it tastes. And with the usual side dishes in Sweden, he is actually really enjoyable. I would not want to eat it every day and my favorite dish there will certainly not be. In addition, one should consider a few things. Firstly, it should be not only opened outdoors but are also consumed outside !! Because in a closed room the smell is pungent but quickly and adheres also persistent. In addition, you should eat it after opening all possible, because it's difficult to keep the remains (unless you have an extra refrigerator in the basement).
I was definitely surprised and will be ordering my fish again!
