If you buy the camera as initial purchase and does not yet have compatible lenses, the kit version is a recommendation with the 18-105mm. The lens can not perform miracles, but nevertheless brings a little telephoto zoom (for compact newcomers, that is roughly equivalent to push 5.7). For low-light photographers who want to make everything always without flash, must establish a bright alternative. The Nikkor 1: 1.8g 50mm looks great on the D5100. Images with "character", "soul", in other words, with bokeh, may also be done with this lens.
The camera is quite small. Basically, that's good, especially when traveling. For my paws it is me but sometimes too delicate. The D5100 can almost everything a large semi-professional DSLR also can. Due to the lack of buttons and scroll wheel but is much hidden in submenus. Simply put, almost all Einstlellungen a "large" are possible but often tricky to achieve. If it must go fast times, which can be a disadvantage. But I prefer from no star, because it was my decision to buy a Prosumerkamera and just not Semiprofi (D7000).
