Technology:
Although I use the USM lenses for several years, I must say, this is the new Autofokustechnoligie (STM) has an evolution.
Subjective feeling by the want to focus on is detected faster. Despite the at fixed focal lengths rather "weak" Aperture 2.8 autofocus makes even in low light conditions excellent job. Getting used to the stepping motor technology, however, is the motorized focusing even in manual mode. So it may be quite possible that my turn has several times back and forth, until the focus point is properly seated.
Anyone hoping to almost soundless focus of USM lenses, will unfortunately be disappointed.
Handling:
Unobtrusive is the lens itself. For it is really incredibly small. So small that the hand still regularly accesses far.
Stabilising Keep the lens is probably feasible only with children's hands. If you use a camera with APS-C sensor, this point should not be underestimated because of the focal length and the associated exposure reduction.
Summary:
This lens is probably the beginning of a new generation.
An all-rounder with excellent viewing angle (both 40mm in small picture format, as well as with a 64mm APS-C sensor)
crisp sharpness into the corners and a (quite useful in everyday life) large aperture.
Who buys this size among the little ones, will have his joy.
And probably soon look on his dusty focal collection of Einstein back.
Because quickly comes to the question: Why should I leave this pocket-lenses ever home?
The only drawback is the probably the price fallen victim, missing Spitzwasser- and dust.
From me there is a buy rating on every single focal length lovers.
And an encouragement to the friends of the zoom. Because the size plays a role but now!
