The downside is that the adapter (for whatever reason), the CEC controller so disturbing that it fails completely. Once the Mac is connected to the AV receiver, the TV can not control the volume of the AV receiver, the PS3 can not turn on the TV, no longer off the TV and the other devices controlling the PS3 using the TV operation also stops working. You can only use each device with the appropriate remote control and the TV displays an error message. It is clearly to the adapter (or Mac), because I have tested different ports and different HDMI cable. Once I unplug the adapter everything works again. Looks as if some noise on the CEC channel is transmitted.
Because I do not want to miss the comfort of CEC, I'm going to use but probably a DVI / SPDIF combination. I had hoped that to deal with this.
Four stars I give anyway, because this problem is probably irrelevant for many and is great for an easy connection of the adapter.
Addendum: Meanwhile, I have found that it's not the adapter but the Mac that the CEC controller fails. (Read more at Apple, link I have not). For other adapters occurs the same problem. There are two ways still a working connection without additional SPDIF cable should get:
Path 1: The Apple Mini DisplayPort -> DVI Adapter
If cable to connect to the Apple adapter DVI> HDMI, this can Surprisingly, also transmit sound. This will only work on Snow Leopard and only in versions> 10.6.6. Under Lion no sound is transmitted. According to Apple Hotline, these are to accidental feature, but this is quite nice with a corresponding OS X version.
Way 2: Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI adapter (eg this one)
There is a trick to stop the disturbing CEC channel. If cable to connect to the HDMI output an HDMI> DVI and then it again an HDMI> DVI adapter appears the interference signal to fall by the wayside. And you get a functioning HDMI connection without loss of CEC.
Allegedly, it also works the Pin abzukleben 13 or off otherwise. But I have not tried.
Since the adapter thus clearly is serving and the error on Apple's side lie, I change my rating to 5 stars.
