The story begins where "David Balfour" ends: David has been able to get home and take his rightful inheritance in possession. His conscience tells him now to confront the authorities who seek him as involved in a murder for which you want an innocent man to the gallows. For him, the matter is not without risk, since it concerned the murder of a political assassination and different sides are keen to suppress or to condemn him as an accomplice of David statement. On the way he met Catriona, the daughter of a clan chief, who is also involved in the story and tries to manipulate David in his favor. It is not evident, resulting in this sequel justifies what may may be because "Catriona" adventurous elements of the plot behind David's thoughts get in back, which are triggered by the conflict between duty and fear to face. Although there may be fighting, kidnappings and travel under adventurous circumstances, but it happens clearly less than in "David Balfour".
