I loved the fact of seeing life during the war through the eyes of a German, because as French, we have a little tendency to think "them", the Germans, the Huns, the Nazis life easier and suffered less. And in the end I'm so hooked on the story and the characters, so real, that I even began to see in Horst, the SS, a human being, awkward and sometimes touching but ....... a few slaps that are quickly back to reality when he says things like "feel my arm is killing Jews I muscled"
In short, as others have said, this is not only a novel but a historical book that would be a shame to miss !!!
