## Features
Positive to mention is that the disks can be taken out without opening the housing. Also QNAP has finally set a USB 3.0 port on the front panel that makes the matching USB hard disk for enough speed during backup. The possibility of the memory can be expanded as required also in practice, only relatively expensive.
## Installation
As an advanced user QNAP commissioning was not a problem for me. Striking was here that the boats and set up the hard drives, including formatting proceeded much faster than I TS-212 was still on my QNAP usual.
## Transcoding
Transcoding is an important feature for many users of NAS devices, because you have to worry about codec and format for the stored media such as photos and videos. In my TS-212, there was the transcoding even as a beta version and has accordingly malfunctioning. Here I was expecting a little more, because now there was a little more computing power available. The transcoding itself has worked well only on the performance I was not entirely convinced, because the original reproduction was a bit choppy but relatively, even though I had already installed the codec pack. Here you have to probably rely instead on the Offline transcoding, which makes for the movies in the background already in advance. I can not say much about it because I first need to test in detail. Annoying but is definitely, that you can not scroll forward or backward when transcoding movies. Very annoying stuff.
## Performance in data transmission?
Here you have to watch because you quickly blames the NAS device. First, you should look at whether the NAS is actually connected with 1 Gigabit on the router / switch. Especially with Fritz & Co can quickly render the 1 Gigabit port but for power saving reasons only runs with 100 Mbit. Are accessed via WLAN on the NAS for you should look also, that a modern AC Wireless has deployed here. My old wireless dongle grabbed just as the 150 Mbit and since the bottleneck is found quickly. If you really want to test the pure speed, then you should try this test by LAN and a Gigabit LAN connection.
## Conclusion
Overall, the QNAP TS-251 is not returned to me a solid upgrade for my TS-212 NAS and I intend the device. The surface, the data transmission and the general handling running thanks to Intel Dual Core but very smooth. Also the access via the Internet and via app runs a lot better and ensures slow for real future Feeling in the use of NAS devices.
From my side a strong buy recommendation from my side. Those who want to can my unboxing the QNAP TS251 watch on YouTube [...]
