MADNESS (extremely positive sense) :-) [UPDATE 20,150,425]

Asus RT-AC56U AC1200 Diamond Dual Band Wireless Router (802.11 a / b / g / n / ac, Gigabit LAN / WAN, USB 3.0, Print Server FTP UPnP VPN, IPv6, 8x SSID, AiRadar) black (accessories)

Customer Review

After 10 years with certain Zyxel (333 + 334), switching to Asus was a transition of superlatives.

Not only that I can download after changing about twice as fast (at the very same internet connection) (4 MB / sec vs.8-9mbyte / sec now), the possibilities of the router are madness.

A version of the review:
Super router simple configuration outofthebox, just awesome, off :)

Version B of the review (what kind of people who like crafting and modding) :-):

* Firmware
It is not on Asus Update Policy (but in itself is not a bad) depend => there are eg. MerlinWRT for the router.
Many improvements, very close to the original firmware.
Even Asus builds partially improvements this firmware into the official !!
Eg. for the current 9999er bug Rmerlin had equal rausgebracht nen Patch and explanation to plug the hole.

* Optware
is a system to download / install 3rd party software. (Function without MerlinWRT)
I for example. PyLoad & transmission installed on the router.
=> PyLoad is an extremely versatile Download Manager that sucks / unpack / ... even LinkDecrypt with spelling is not a problem.
Is very stable, can be controlled via Android app or web interface.
=> Transmission is a BittorrentClient.
Also is very stable, beautiful WebUI or levelized via AndroidApp.
=> There is a lot of other (Optware) Apps, something for everyone.

So where I previously had to be permanently run a complete PC, now my router does me the same when not even nem 10th the power consumption of the PC.
Also the convenient control via androidsAPP is awesome.

* SSH access (eg. Via RSA Key), so you can control the router securely from anywhere.
With SSH Commander (freeware Android) you can save commands and so comfortable the router taxes.
I can so a WiFi & Unignore, eject disks unmount &, start software / stop, set WlanSendeLeistung, router reboot, well just everything you give even one else can make via CLI, which is pretty much everything :)
There are user scripts that can control things at events, CronJobs to run up time Depending on commands, it boah everything is possible!

* Router WebUI:
Very clearly, and especially Flott you can pretty much manage.
Those who provide SSH / SSH Commander establishes, needs the WebUI much less, since you can just execute the commands directly.

* For me the USB 2.0 port will depend a USB stick for Optware (this is where the 3rd party apps on it), and the USB 3.0 port, a 2.5 "hard drive on it.
You can manage the files on via SSH / SCP / SFTP / FTP / Smaba / NFS / .. and access it.
Access via Lan (Samba / Windows Share) on 3.0USBPlatte goes with approximately 40-45mbyte / sec read / write (PC with GigabitLan).

* Phew What else ...
Wifi coverage is certainly important for some, I find the range is sufficiently well ... :) but that depends on so many factors, as must each try it myself with him.
As for speed / performance, at least one is well equipped for years.
I got my router upside down in the 1st floor mounted, as I am draufgekommen have I so better reception on the ground floor. (4/4 bar on the tablet, at 25% power).
And we have more steel in concrete as concrete, so therefore I find that ever good :)

CONCLUSION: cheaper, faster, more versatile, router, with extremely many ways by MerlinWRT + Optware.

PS:
Who I thought knew me before NeuROuterKauf even with SSH / Linux / ... from, you are wrong.
I got me all the net culled, and actually found for just about everything a HowTo, or even assistance from other forums.
Often the developer of MerlinWRT has directly helped the people / answered.
So if you want, which can! :)
You just have to invest enough time for searching / learning.

Update --------------------------------- 20150425 --------------- -----------

This time the things that have been learned since writing the recession :)

* Cronjobs
Something of GEIL
"Cru" isn tool that asuswrt-merlin mitliefert
so you can easily cronjobs (ie Time Tasks) create.
with me, the WLAN provides for breakfast (TabNewsLesen) to 100%
then to 25% during the day
and if I then in the evening lie beneath the router on the sofa, it turns down to 1%. (= radiation death occurs later one :))
At about 1730 on the router my TV panel, and unpacked everything pyLoad has daytime down sucked, and shifts series / movies from the USB stick to the hard drive.
(Go to sleep early) and at 9am evening, unmounted a cronjob all hard drives, goes to sleep, and keep the system (stop), little after that switches the of router overnight a timer, because the part is indeed more economical than a PC but sucks off with active USB Hub, but always 25W.
Unmounting necessary to the drives / sticks in front of a turn off, otherwise file system error may arise.
In addition, the router checks at nem restart all incorrect unmounted drives for errors, which takes time.

* USB 3.0 hubs on AC56U 3.0 Port:

nada ..

got few different attempts, they are called "hub" recognized loud log, but only with 4 ports (no matter obs because in a real 7Portler was), and no matter which device port on the hub is detected.
Unfortunately, so is that even not.

USB 3.0 drive (Toshiba, the günstigeste 2TB) on USB 3.0 Hub
SMB network drive under Windows 7
54MB / Sec Read
35MB / sec write

* USB 2.0 Hubs:
NO PROBLEM!

Hab 7 additional disks to NEM old Dlink active USB 2.0 hub, hang the little black knight, and it does perfectly.
with "hdparm" (optware) can manage the drives when it comes to energy saving mode.
You can sleep the plates manually set when you for example. unmounted, or even send the "koma" (lowest possible energy saving mode), after which they are no longer to achieve, and only after nem or Reboot abstöpseln reached again.

* Optware
I have on a 64GB Aldi 3.0 stick (but the USB 2.0 port) run.
With a 2GB partionmagic ext2 partition created.
There you can install Optware precisely via guide.
Best Tools to now:

* PyLoad
* Transmission
* Nano (small fine editor)
* Hdparm (HDD idle mode manager)

the rest of the drive was a ext4 partition (but with extra parameters so that no journaling (extra writes) carried out).
Is more durable than ne ntfs partition.
And one must note => who partitioned a USB stick, can anyway access Windows only on the first partition, no matter even if the second NTFS / FAT / ... is formatted.
So ntfs brings the router that runs on Linux, anyway.
Only my external hard drives formatted with NTFS, but only because the plane of früherher was so.
Should I bring ne new ma, wirds also be ext4, because I speak the plates anyway only via network on, ie the filesystem is verwedente spree, unless I want it also ma plugs so directly to the PC and was just Windows.
On the ext4 partition writes pyLoad / Transmission its downloads.

Take regular backup from the USB stick !!! IMPORTANT:
Cheap Sticks tolerated no regular write access or continuous operation (whenever plugged into the router, is / remains USB Stick son quite warm in the long run!).
One has already given up the ghost after 2 weeks => All data Futsch :(
My USB stick is mounted on nen old CPU cooler, and remains cool, he is also infected via extension cable to the hub, then the Hubwärme / router heat the stick not additionally heat => longer lifetime.

Here are some links to instructions (think links are removed from Amazon, so Google search terms, the first hit is the link!)
sorry is all in English, I search only in English to help :)

Optware done right:
Google: asuswrt optware

MerlinWRT in detail (config files / adjustments / ...)
Google: github merlinwrt config

* Hmm what else was ... I got back aja NEN small slow-running 80x80 fan it tinkered.
CPU / WlanChipsatzTemp went down by about 10 degrees.
The fan blows air into the router, and sucks the air through an Aldi pollen flow, thus is the time to clean, as if one draws in the air and all the dust sucked in time into the router.
Necessary ?? Nöhhh even if people breathe the CPU 70 degrees and more is when they see that is normal for this type of CPU, because even 10-20Grad goes on it more, no probs.
But common sense says, the cooler the better for all the other parts, so just fan :)
