May the Oregon to be with you ....

My Garmin GPS60 (standard) has made limp after 3 years. From 10x battery inserting it says 9x * Battery too low *. The tenth time everything is OK and the freshly charged batteries last for 10 days at 1.5 hours a day cycling through. I think it was the strong vibrations and shocks on the handlebars that have given to the duration of the good piece of the rest.

What to do? Repairing no longer worthwhile. The GPS60CSx be a good idea, especially because all the accessories would match of GPS60, moreover, it is now really cheap. But why actually always be reasonable? And if something new, then please also equipment of the latest generation. Belly going head and that's why I've decided for the Oregon 300.

What you should order to:
* Screen Protector
* Microfiber Cloth
* Sanyo Eneloop NiMH batteries size AA
* If required: Micro SD card, SDHC may also like to be.

I have the original Garmin handlebar mount for buy's bike with this - but only on a transitional basis. There is no loss whatsoever in this model. The rattle of the pavement is 1: 1 by (time of the fork apart) and I will not again risk a total failure. For opportunity drivers the original bracket is but a good choice: simple, safe and functional.

What you should do after unpacking the first:
1. Remove the packaging film on the display
2. Clean the screen with microfiber cloth
3. Fit Screen Protector
4. Insert Eneloop batteries without recharging
5. USB cable to connect your computer (Oregon automatically turns on)
6. Backup the original files Garmin draw (about 55 MB in 20 minutes)
7 Games without frontiers

Why backup of the original files? Backup is basically always a good idea. So you can rewrite the configuration files or against improved exchange from the Internet to your heart - and if it was nothing, then you play the original file back. File access via USB you always. If you have no backup, you look in the tube, because of course Garmin sets no recovery CD for system recovery in the event.

A helpful hint was the interface of Garmin Serial * * * on Garmin Spanner switch in the system settings *. This means that when you plug in the USB cable that Oregon does not automatically go into connect mode, but can be operated normally. Unlike the GPS60 models the external power supply is now running well above the mini-USB jack. If so, for in this mode. B. in the car to connect a suitable 12V cable, then you can also use the GPS functions. In * Garmin Serial * one sees merely the Connect screen, and is in the car absolutely sinnfrei.

The original German language pack from GARMIN is genuine in joke. I guess who the English file simply chased through a 08/15 translation program and then not even be proofread.

* Free German, European and world map from OpenStreetMap
Mir has not become so clear, why should I spend a fortune for Garmin Maps if free and legally open source card with the same functionality offered. On top of the OSM maps are much more current, since there is almost monthly updates.

* SOLID wallpaper
I think everyone knows, like pebbles, blades of grass and raindrops look - therefore I have to ask why you need it as a background image in the GPS receiver. Unfortunately, some representations in Oregon are semi-transparent, so that the silhouette of the background image shows through. The satellite reception side, for example, is not easier to read by underlaid hearts or with the translucent face of the sweetheart - the opposite is true, as everyone can imagine easily.

* RamMount handlebar mount for bicycle use
What can I say: the RamMount has a damper ;-). I hope the money was worth it because of the price of RamMount you get 3 Garmin mounts.

Why five stars?

A star's for display: Maybe I've caught Sunday's device, but the readability in all situations perfectly (see Settings battery consumption).

A star for the battery consumption: 15 hours as promised, and with standard AA batteries. This is exemplary. Therefore, one can also use the good Eneloop from Sanyo. My Settings: Compass from, from WAAS, backlight at 40% for 15 sec, battery saving mode..

A star for the GPS reception: Even here at the desk in my study I have positioning accuracy of +/- 11 meters. At the window I have peaks in the lobby.

A star's fleet of startup: My old GPS60 has found from and foraged at ever 5 minutes and nothing, even though I have only a couple of hours before off at the same position. I always had an external GPS antenna outside the window, so I the thing vorglühen before driving * * could. With Oregon that's no longer an issue. Best reception 30 seconds after switching on. I am excited (maybe I'll really a Sunday device).

A star for the user interface and the touch screen: a significant improvement over the previous operation way - even if the operation has thus become a little more complicated in a few cases, because there is no hotkey for more submenus.

Next tarnishes m. E. the fun a bit:

Included * No Mapsource CD more included (but is not absolutely necessary; the data can be downloaded as GPX files directly from the device)

* The accessories of previous devices no longer fits (which indeed was obvious in terms of the Garmin profit optimization). The only exception is the wrist strap you can still use, but which is no longer settled in Oregon. The hand strap is - together with a carbine - incidentally, a perfect addition securing the bicycle, if you have the Oregon times but not securely latched.

* The olive part of the housing (Greeting from the federal government - but a matter of taste)

... But that is not enough for a star deduction.
