Military History [annual subscription] (magazine)

Customer Review

In April 2010, the 50th edition of 'Military History' from the publisher Pabel Moewig appeared. Editorial concept according to publisher advertising is: 'The Magazine of Military History, the great battles of world history, military personalities, weapons and technology'. The magazine was founded in 2002 has performed well over the last decade with an increasing number of subscribers in the market and is a success story of the chief editor Dr. Schulze-Wegener (historian and reserve officer) and his scientific team. The glossy special-interest titles is reduced provided with advertising: Rather focused on the cover pages it concerns mainly related literature, collectibles and model.

The success does not just happen, it is called but the numerous military interested in history, which is not 'torture' by scientific works want to or can, but are not willing to give up well-founded and legitimate researched reports or even confronted with dubious right-wing publications want to be.
Closer target group are young people who receive a moderate price an easy to read entertaining read with pictures, maps and drawings. Known, less known and unknown military events and battles and military people in the world's history are described, analyzed and even distortion unreflective views rectified. Large proportion occupy the description of various weapons, weapon systems genera / 'and uniforms. A 'must' in every issue is the confrontation with the Third Reich.

In the previous fifty titles no continuous main topic is realisiert- there is no 'collective compulsion' built up because the books do not necessarily more or less close to each other. The full range of editorial topics is treated in a journalistic contemporary mix. From the collection of 5000 years is mainly 'but not only - treated the 19th and 20th centuries. The main focus events are described with German participation.
A chronological sequence of topics is not apparent to me. The single book each offers a mix of the first and Second World War, ancient, medieval, Prussia. Different types of weapons are presented in their historical development. Even death cult, military cemeteries and suffering of the soldiers to be addressed. Contemporary reference is made under the heading 'Museum News' by referring to current exhibitions on related topics.
The scientifically sound quality is ensured by the professionally relevant designated authors who present their contributions in substantive, rather balanced way and are their reputation and integrity beyond doubt. This can dispense with footnotes also for readability.

Layout and content presentation were refined over fifty episodes and customized media development by, for example also offers accompanying DVDs and are partly evidence of in-depth websites. So the reader is encouraged to look at the issues from different perspectives and to question. This is a non-negligible contribution to the teaching of the journal, could also be, however, used by the selected papers very selective in school history lessons.

About the meaning and necessity of military history magazine with (mainly / also) young addressees can be fought admirably. But the need is apparently available. The demand is undisputed for qualified publications, which is hereby served reputable. There are - perhaps particularly interested in the Third Reich - youth objectively, on the floor of the Basic Law moving, informed and thus prevented from dubious publications of right-wing scene. In 'Military History' will be no war or past glorification, but a largely realistic representation also of hardship and horror of war. It is competently researched and prepared; language is sober narrative, not sensational, but appealing. The title page presentation is clearly 'matter of taste' but the real teaser for potential readers seem to be. Scientific qualification and didactic value of 'Military History' are given.

In effect might 'Military History' be a 'reference', if not a highly recommendable Index missing. Also at least one year theme directory would souvenir value. Desirable a more recognizable and traceable line in the topics follow. (Perhaps this lexicon in the still to be developed website at [...]) is found Otherwise, each again surprising potpourri of topics.

Military History is not a scientific journal and by no means a scientific source for students and experts. But an interesting foil made, easy-to-consuming reading, a Military History magazine spread spectrum and modern polyphonic composition / design that could be adapted cleverly to the zeitgeist reception taste in their presentation and topics treatment.
