Ancillary Justice (Imperial Radch, Volume 1) (Paperback)

Customer Review

I had really been looking forward to this novel that sounded announcements all super, the idea interesting. In implementation, however, appear diverse very annoying things that cloud the reading fun.

Firstly, it is a simple action / revenge story. Any new ideas SciFi / perspective in vain. The theme KI is only used not analyzed, questioned or demonstrated interest. The setting is a 08/15 Space Opera setting, "tea drinking Romans in the universe," one might say. Neither the culture nor the characterization could touch or convince me.

The novel describes a millennia-old conquest by huge spaceships, which are equipped with an AI and hundreds of thousands of troops from the dead (?) Soldiers. This Ancilla are mysteriously also ancient and usually consist of selected members of the conquered peoples, which are enhanced with cyberware and must serve as a frozen soldiers without own will beyond death.

I think the author has even tried these things (which makes KI with a culture, what kind of a culture that is thousands of years of war leads) to address, but it is unfortunately under in part strange dialogues and a little action story.

Of course, then the inevitable aliens are sometimes mentioned, that were sometime and somewhere times the only ones who could offer the conquerors forehead (any other of the thousands of worlds appear to be human, but just different nations / cultures). And you do not hear more about it.

That the story from the perspective of the quasi combat ships (and the AI of this ship) is told, makes most of the problems. I did not have (added: it is no longer the complete AI but only one last small fragment that is left) feel that here speaks a KI / thinks too many emotional and not logical approaches and decisions. Why the protagonist such as a half-dead soldiers looped throughout the book, which will only cost you money, it steals and cheats her some help not once in any, remains a mystery.

Meet Technolgische Super Miracle on primitive conditions (energy body armor wearing, catching a fall of 3km but the whole day to eat only in water soggy bread).

Why dead soldiers have to eat at all ... and is as defined dead when they breathe, eat it, can die ... all a mystery.

Ah yes, the "race" of the protagonist knows no difference between the sexes, allegedly because AIs have difficulty to recognize them correctly after Außerlichkeiten. Already clear in the novel see the AI, or the "heroine" several times with a glance if someone is lying, only on the basis of external characteristics (skin color, posture, eye twitching I know), but the sex they may not realize .... to write a poor excuse for a supposedly modern post gender style. Everything was already there, only better.

Overall, I have too many and nicked to pale set pieces from various books, films and history together and not good enough processed into something new. There are other parts followed (of course), if I which is still read rather questionable.

To kill a rainy weekend perhaps sufficient for frequent reader of (hard) science fiction a mistake.
