For those who are looking for a direct comparison with extant, should take a little time, or even in better way to test yourself.
I've been obsessed with a long list of standard Canon lenses, or against each other can compare:
with Canon EOS 300D + 7D (APS-C)
- Canon EF 50mm f / 1.4 (test)
- Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II (owned, submitted)
- Canon EF 50mm f / 2.5 Macro (2 pieces owned)
with Olympus PEN EP-2 + FD-MFT Adapter
- Canon FDn 50 mm L f / 1.2 (owned, submitted)
- Canon FDn 50 mm f / 1.2 (owned, submitted)
- Canon FDn 50 mm f / 1.4 (owned, submitted)
- Canon FDn 50 mm f / 1.8 (owned, submitted)
- Canon FD 50mm f SSC / 1.4 (owned)
- Canon FD 35mm TS SSC f / 2.8 (owned)
... And now to the positive things that so brings the small pancakes with it, incidentally, is not much new to the Vorrezensionen:
- 1. It creates an imperceptible to the eye barrel distortion, which can be revealed only through laboratory test or 200% -Zoom to straight lines.
- 2. The lens is calculated for FF (full frame) and has therefore at APS-C + -H a natural advantage in vignetting (Randabdunklungen). However, at maximum aperture (F / 2.8) of the light falloff comparatively high and clearly visible against the ancient shards (50's + Macro 50mm SSC at each f / 2.8). However dimmed from F / 4.0 is to the eye nothing more to see ..
- 3. And now for the best of the lens, the resolution. The center is already excellent at full aperture, with a minimum of waste to the peripheral areas. Stopping down to f / 4.0 improves the peripheral areas, so you get an excellent quality across the entire image. From f / 11.0 then the decline in performance begins slowly, then clearly comes to light at f / 16.0.
- 4. The infamous fringing (CAs) with fast lenses are absolutely not an issue. But is a pear apples comparison, since the lens does not come in the critical areas from f / 1.4 in.
And what does the whole of the potential users: An absolute YES as regards the performance and the price if you want to make excellent pictures at low budget price.
... And why writes since the very beginning of sham and assigns only 3 stars?
So .....
- 1. It lacks the light intensity, which is typical and necessary in low light for this class of lenses. Minimum supposed to be f / 1.8.
- 2. The minimum distance of approximately 25 mm with a magnification factor of approximately 1: 1: 5.5 is as close as a macro, but is still none. In a comparison with real macros (EF 100mm USM + EF 50mm), it is also a chance for a comparable image section in the sharpness of the image center.
- 3. There is absolutely no chance against USM lenses, when switched off IS when it comes to noise when shooting video.
Point 1 and 2 leads me to a rating of 4 ++ star, but point 3 has created a green-blue anger expression with me. I can absolutely understand the 1-star reviews, but probably not accept because to a selective basis. Here Canon has committed a serious mistake to praise this lens as video Pancacke, hence the title of sham and written down to 3 stars.
Any user who has set its focus on video, can not do anything with this part, or make auto focus and make scenic films. I sat in person for the films with the 7D EF 24-105mm L IS USM IN WHEN IS a (unfortunately produces audible noise), or even better the Oly PEN (with stabilization in the housing) + my old FD / FDN fixed focal lengths (favorite lens = FD 85mm ASPHERICAL f / 1.2 = top notch).
The Pancacke was probably for the new Canon EVIL system cameras (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens - Canon EOS M) designed as an upgrade lens. Since the EOS M but are not yet available, these lenses are still sold in advance. How useful is this mini-shard acts on a large EOS with battery grip, everyone must decide for themselves, but for a pocket camera, this combination will never be.
Finally, for people with no video ambitions and without existing corresponding equivalent Highly Recommended (4-5 Amazon asterisk). Users with existing 50mm special lens can use this part just as a second lens with a wider range of applications, in fact, what the great performance + price talks. For me personally, as shards changers from the service, the decision was clear, the existing solutions are clearly better. If you want a super sharp Canon Mini Macro had already in his hand, who knows what I'm talking ....
Complement 20121024:
Now I finally know why my video qualities of the lens appeared to be deficient:
Lenses with the stepper motor technology (STM) to support in combination with the new Hybrid autofocus of Canon EOS 650D rapid continuous focusing in live view and video mode.
This important information was supposed to, instead of the meaningless product description, are paramount. Ie full use of the video features are currently only available with the Canon EOS 650D possible. Not even the new EOS 5D III has this hybrid AF :-(
