It lived up to expectations in full, although it does not make me perfectly happy:
- The ConfigUtility is available only for Windows, although it is based primarily on a weaving technique
- The configuration is possible via called Tool, an integrated web interface or Telnet access is not possible
- The communication between the device and the tool takes place by means of broadcasts (totally unnecessary and technically incomprehensible)
- Due to the abovementioned fact, the password for the switch in each network segment is sent to all devices
- The password is transmitted in clear text!
- When using only self-defined VLANs the configutil no longer reaches the switch. Just be aware not block the access
These points are largely no showstoppers, but what Netgear was thinking to transfer all data via broadcast and password in plain text, is beyond me. That borders on mischief and should be taken into account in safety-critical environments necessarily. When the switch but administered by a separate power or remove the management of the environment, I see no major problems.
Given the very low price but the unit is highly recommended.
