Franz Ferdinand takes his time. After two dance-rock albums ultra-efficient and an equally pleasing electro-rock album, the band was exhausted, and took his time. Much good has taken him, since he's back with a fourth installment in summary form of the previous three. From the introductory Right Action, the tone is set: homecoming, a white rock-funk that owes as much to the Talking Heads at MC5. Then comes Evil Eye which Prince in reverse, that is to say a form of strange rock-funk. And the titles keep coming with pleasure, whether unstoppable anthems like Love Illumination or sunshine-power-pop on Fresh Strawberries. On the diptych Trason! Animals. / The Expanded Universe, the group takes the formula of his debut, the aptly electro reuses elements of the previous volume, and a composition book to listen to in one sitting, superb, with intonations in his voice that Kapranos did not know him (or maybe we had not really paid attention), so that at the end of Trason! you'd presqu'entendre Jim Morisson. In short, the crooning of funk-rock-electro-electric, it is possible and that's fine. Everything ends with a Goodbye Lovers and Friends, where the group recites, in a great surge of cynicism and assumed foutage of mouth, not like pop music, all on funeral background. One of the group? After this album in summary form or best-of, it is possible. But given the talent of the quartet make us dance, we would prefer that it be the end of an era for the band, before a new era. The Deluxe version offers a big dozen live versions of most tracks on the album and some old songs (including Can not Stop Feeling, unstoppable electro song). The lives offer perfect sound (they were actually played live in studio conditions) and show (if ever there who doubt listening albums) how the group has an ability to make dance his audience, all on its extremely rock, served by great melodies. In short, a very good fourth album, perhaps lacking a little originality, but which demonstrates the great mastery of the group, and that all fans should not miss.
