So far I had been working with an old film scanner from Plustek, the results of which max. were sufficient for the average amateur. In recent years I have negatives and slides scanned with a Canon flatbed scanner with a transparency unit, whose results were at accurately clean and scratch-free starting material quite satisfactory. But what kind of material is that? In addition, that bothered me the effort in mounting the film holder.
For 8200i AI: The installation of the hardware and of SliverFast carried out quickly and without obstacles. I work with an Intel Core2 Quad Q8200 processor, 4GB of RAM and Windows 7 64 bit.
Incorporation into the interaction of hardware and software needs halt its time.
Having now digitized hundreds of negatives I can evaluate:
+ The scan results are absolutely ok.
+ Pro image should be about 5 min. To be calculated if one on the reduction to scratches.
+ The infrared-based dust removal delivers amazingly good results.
+ The SilverFast software is reliable and offers many meaningful correction options a priori.
- Threading old, corrugated negative strips is somewhat cumbersome.
- SilverFast requires some experience in photography, also the analog (preferably from the old darkroom practice).
This reduces the overall impression of this high-quality device in my view in any way!
Anyone who wants to digitize many negatives or slides and a good dose of photographically-technical knowledge and experience brings, I can absolutely recommend 8200i AI.
A request to the manufacturer: Super it would be if it also film holder for the format 24x24 (was until the 1950s also used in the late 1930s) and were for the exotic DDR format 18x24!
