The French-Algerian drummer Manu Kache is probably many music lovers primaer be known as a rock drummer, because he has swung the Trommelstoecke among others, Sting and Dire Sraits. He also has to the French counterpart, Germany Idol 'as one of the judges involved. Since there is some jazz fans certainly walk down cold back, but one should not jump to conclusions in the case Kaches. The man loves namely jazz, especially the legendary ECM sound. He is also a member of January Garbarek band and had a significant interest in the artistic success of Garbarek's latest album, In Praise of Dreams'. So it's not surprising that Kache now be submitted ECM solo debut as a jazz drummer. And I must say that the purchase of his new album, Neighbourhood 'quite worthwhile. Since the board is with me in the house it will be uninterrupted and even my WG comrades have not yet (as is usual) complained about the constant noise disturbance Jazz !!!
In fact, Neighbourhood is a quiet, lyrical jazz album as you would expect from ECM. Kaches compositions remind me very much of Miles Davis in his modal phase '(ie the phase which, Kind of Blue us among many other masterpieces' has given as a gift from heaven) and Blue on Herbie Hancock's touch panels from the 1960s (mainly , Maiden Voyage 'and, Emperyan Isles'). The quality of the Neighbourhood is therefore quite comparable to the classic albums of modern jazz. Of course this is also the merit of Kaches Mitstreiten. One can say that ECM producer Manfred Eicher for Manu has put together an ECM-star band which look at (or listening) can be. Jan Garbarek plays tenor saxophone in a warm and natural way, you're not really accustomed to from him. This is the quietest bluesisgste and Jan Garbarek, I know! However, it is the Polish trumpeter (and veteran ECM) Tomasz Stanko of Garbarek overshadowed. Stanko has brought not only his bass player and pianist, he also controls some of the best solos to the plate in. Since its playground is strongly reminiscent of the modal jazz and some of Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard is oriented, Stanko's trumpet lines fit excellently to Kaches quiet and introspective compositions.
Of course you should not fail to mention also the Boss himself. Kache is an extraordinarily talented drummer who manages his instrument confidently yet unobtrusive to establish within the band. A comparison with Paul Motian and Jon Christensen suggests itself. However, one notices but at some points that Kache is (unlike Motian and Christensen) from pop, rock and jazz influences equally. The resolution rhythmic structures as Elvin Jones and Tony Williams is not such a thing. Manu also occurs on a more confident composer and arranger who knows how to tastefully accentuate without slipping into kitsch or stereotypes which is not always easy especially with jazz ballads.
Kache and Manfred Eicher is an excellent jazz album that is sure to become one of the classics of the ECM sound soon. One can not go wrong with the disk actually: she works as a pleasant background music as well as a complex and challenging kuenstlersich acoustic jazz album. Neighbourhood is so for jazz connoisseurs - and lovers suitable both for the beginner. If you like acoustic modern jazz in the style of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans should you! In this I would like to draw Neighbourhood!
