Well, why was the MX518 only "almost" perfect? Many people, especially those with a sensitive ear (I do not ^^) had, disturbed at the continuous whistling, to the MX518 (as well as other Logitech mice) uttered. When G400 Logitech has finally managed to overcome this whistling, no matter how close you hold his ear to the mouse, because whimpers nothing.
Another point of criticism was the smooth surface of the MX518. This is in the G400 now rougher, which is not quite as rough as the G5 or G500. After my subjective impression, I must say that I find the smooth surface of the MX518 pleasant, but that may be matter of habit.
Then found many that the "technical value" of the MX518 today are no longer appropriate, they had yet innately only one polling rate of 125 Hz (signal to the PC only every 8 ms) and a maximum resolution of 1600 dpi (1800 dpi and in the refresh).
The G400 therefore can now also with 250 Hz, 500 Hz and operate the USB maximum polling rate of 1000 Hz (signal to the PC every 1 ms). I myself have the 125Hz to the 1000Hz compared (also ingame) and maybe I'm not "pr0" enough, but I have noticed no difference. ^^ Many gamers swear by the fact that they already know the difference between 125 Hz and 500 Hz, which I now do not want to dispute them. For me personally, but also just "nice to have" and not be relevant to a decision to purchase in the future a high polling rate. Aside from that one must also pay for high polling a certain trade-off: The processor is used up more. When I use the G400 always move at 1000 Hz in a circle, then my Phenom II X4 955 clocked from 0.8 GHz in idle up to the full 3.2 GHz and one of the 4 cores will be utilized at around 40%. At 500 Hz, he clocked up high just 2:08 Ghz and a core capacity to around 30%. At 125 Hz it remains at the 0.8 GHz and a core is utilized to 20%.
We come to the maximum resolution of the G400. This is 3600 dpi. Now I have to say that I only have 800 dpi already used in the MX518 in the vast majority of the time (of course, without interpolation by the Windows Mauskonfig, thus goes flutes no precision). Quite simply because I'm Mid Sense Gamer and can cope well with the 800 dpi. For some high sense gamers like 1800 dpi but have been too little, I can understand. Personally, however, applies to me: Again, no purchase criterion.
Other improvements could include even the slightly lighter cable and a smidgen increased weight of the G400 itself.
A word of optional driver software, without dwelling on it: The G400 is configured using the "Logitech Gaming Software". This leaves a much better impression than it did SetPoint then about 3 years ago with me. I can remember only removed because SetPoint had annoyed me so much that I had to uninstall it.
Let's just say: Are there also things that have worsened over the MX518 in the G400? And yes, there are, unfortunately. :-(
And rattle the left and right mouse button of my copy, the right is negligible, the left but very disturbing noticeably and at least for me. It is not so that if you lift the mouse and shakes, you would hear something rattling. However, when used on the index finger on the left mouse button, you can hear a clatter and noted that the key is not applied properly fixed. Likewise, I hear the G400 "vibrate" when I type on my keyboard (I have a strong keystroke ^^). The latter has really bother me that I have finally decided to return the mouse.
Two other petty things that struck me:
- The middle mouse button (on the wheel) is a little difficult to move than with my MX518, but this may also be due to the wheel of the MX518 after 3 years use simply more is "worn out".
- According to my subjective impression about the G400 in the range of Logitech logo was "from the inside" a smidgen warm. I had this impression during the MX518 never before. In any case, absolutely not annoying (even now in summer).
CONCLUSION: So how was the MX518 mouse an almost perfect, so Logitech has launched an almost perfect successor to life with the G400. Each, to the slight rattling does not interfere with (as many reviewers here), I can only recommend the mouse. I myself (and also some other reviewers / commentators here ^^) prefer to wait on a "G400 refresh", in the back everything is as tight as in the MX518.
