Karl Richter and Handel, that goes for me not really together. Too heavy, too ponderous. The German-language version, which sounds much more animated, touching and poignant for me, is that of Karl Forster / Berliner Symphoniker / Choir of St. Hedwig's Cathedral - a grand ensemble of singers: Bjoner - Töpper - Traxel - Engen (1963 - BMG Classics).
Besides the fact that the German translation of the original English text is well done and the music additional Rythmik and gloss gives - whether a recording in English or German has been performed, you can see in advance and is not grounds for a complaint. (There is already a lot more English than German recordings.)
