Before continuing with my assessment, for those who are currently evaluating the WD TV Live and need 3D, despite what people say, I found out later that he read perfectly the 3D format files mkv because the necessary setting is in the TV or projector on condition that they are compatible with the 3D. So what's the difference with the Mede8er? Well, it has the 3D simulation options, Side by Side and Top and Bottom in its menu but the same are in the TV or projector. In short, to my taste, the WD TV Live cost almost half and it is easier to use. It is also much more beautiful on the screen.
What I like with the Mede8er:
1. It is completely customizable. Skins are available on the forum for free. We can even develop your own skin.
2. if you need subtitles, it's internet search and, if found, it installs them. Awesome !!
3. after a certain time to adapt, it is quite easy to use and its performance on the screen is excellent!
4. The addition of an external HDD 2TB or more gives you a huge library of movies that do not take up space!
5. The image quality of movies in 720 or 1080p is exceptional.
What I do not like the Mede8er:
1. A forum member Mede8er achieved manual for that model because, as he said, "it is so complicated to set after 6 months still does not understand how it works and the leaflet that comes with is very poorly did. " I am 100% agree with him! To give you an idea, each file must be placed in its own folder. Otherwise, the 'Scrapers' can not the scanner. It is not necessary with the WD TV Live which the 'scraping' automatically.
2. To see all information gathered by 'scraping' must be put in Med8er Jukebox mode. Once you've done it you can not see your files in list mode. With the WD TV Live to access the Jukebox you select 'Video' and to see a list mode, with or without overview, select 'File'.
3. I often need to know the hour. Set the time with the Mede8er is not at all clear and it is not even in the manual! It is impossible to do it without an internet connection, but once connected it done alone. For cons, the time appears nowhere except in the Setup option. What's the point then ??? No option to display the clock as a screen either but on standby, this is on the WD TV Live.
4. I have more than 50 years and my vision is not at the top, which mempêche to see what is printed on the buttons on the remote control ... even with my glasses and illuminated buttons. On the WD, the buttons are not backlit but they are 3x the size therefore, easier to use. In addition, the buttons are so small on the Mede8er I often pat on the wrong side button.
5. Mede8er offers an optional keyboard. I thought not to need it. I was wrong! To connect to the network must enter the user name and password. This is not possible with the remote. With the WD there is a virtual keyboard on the screen.
8. If you want a WiFi connection you have to order the model with the antenna (20 euros more). Otherwise, you can order it later for 43 euros more. You have been warned !! There is also an optional dongle, but apart from the fact that it is more expensive on the forums it is not recommended. Oddly, the WD includes WiFi without the need to buy whatever it is.
9. I confess for purchasing the Mede8er for playing 3D files and there I am totally disappointed. 9 times out of 10 the box crashes! That is to say, it read the movie, but the remote control does not respond then it has no control over the film. Even we can not pause or stop it. The only way to get by is to unplug the box electrically. I asked for help to solve this problem on the forum but I have received no response. That said, it happens over time WD to time but it's pretty rare. I hope that a new firmware version released sooner or later to correct this problem.
10. The YouTube option takes too long to load, at least 10x the WD. You're going to use once or twice and then never again. Frankly, I do not buy a media box to access YouTube. This is only a gadget in my opinion.
I could go on for a long time with things that do not like but it will not help. The WD TV Live is not perfect either! Say, if Mede8er can find a solution to the 'crashes' with 3D files and integrating a virtual keyboard in its firmware, it would be a good step forward.
