my claim: the box is DVD isos, HD MKV to 1080p, DivX and many over the years supported video file and play back photos from USB disk and network. subtitles, multiple audio streams and DVD menus to be supported. the image is via HDMI to a 42 "LCD, the sound will be digitally delivered in max. DD or DTS 5.1 to a current receiver. There you go.
First: - of all things - the is a remote control, a power supply unit and a composite A / V cable attached (via an HDMI cable I would have been more happy). it is put into operation quickly and provided with the latest firmware 1:18 (update to the comments below). all connected cables, called the clear setup - and lo and behold, the little machine eats without complaint my Windows shares (XP and 7) as well as a 1.5 TB NTFS drive, and has been running the first film. Quality is (in conjunction with a Toshiba REGZA) really impressive - even at a divx. Unfortunately, the weaknesses (teething?) reveal themselves only after a while.
- The data-navigation is logical, but awkward. too often you have to start at the top level. Favorites can not be renamed. the space to display the files is too small (scrolls with longer names)
- DVD menus are supported, however: you can when the movie is launched, not go back to the main menu. alternative camera angles (multi-angles) are indeed displayed with an icon, but can not be selected
- Slow motion, frame-by-frame forward and many other DVD players known and familiar standards are not (yet) available
- Cover display, information about the film, as well as sorting by genre, year, etc. (such as the Media Browser plugin for WMC) are illusion and there are probably unfortunately remain with the development speed of ASUS also
- It has to be switched manually 2-6 channel sound - although the software detects the channels properly
+ Looks great, is cheap, videos run smoothly
+ Support and regular firmware updates available (English speaking asus forum and some German-speaking Communities)
+ Picture and sound quality without blemish
+ Network quickly and easily facility
what remains?
love ASUS developers: Why do you do a product that beta-tested is the customer? I get now already relatively late in the life cycle of this players one, that many are teething already eliminated. nevertheless, you realize that most vulnerabilities could be actually solved by correct programming.
since delivery in beta state but unfortunately now common practice and the O! Play quite well suggests, there is of me fabled three points.
