To call Joy Division as fellow riders of the punk movement, I think first of all, even for wrong, because the rock music of contemporaries like Sex Pistols or The Clash has this music nothing in common: Unknown Pleasures consists solely of gloomy basslines without its own melody, and with extremely heruntergeschraubtem tempo style, which can best be compared with the Goth Industrial bands from the 90s.
My personal problem here is simply that the album does not offer the slightest change; from the first to the last minute Unknown Pleasures is one big carpet of sound from bass tones, underlaid with a little improvised percussion rhythms with really nichtexistentem recognition. Compositionally this album has nothing to offer the least: There are no choruses that stick, melodies, where you mitwippt the individual songs dripping from just as gloomy muzak and after 40 minutes, the album is over.
Like all musicians, who voluntarily came out of the life, also enjoys the singer Ian Curtis legend status I personally have grave doubts as to whether he would be alone come by his musical skills to a similar international fame: His feeble baritone voice is devoid of any emotion that span includes a single octave; and this is not generated here also unfortunately the cold of Skinny Puppy album but fits seamlessly into the modest Tonrepertoire in the background. The musical poverty complements beautifully with the vocal poverty and leaves the impression of a MySpace-composition.
"Unknown Pleasures" is considered Deprimucke, but I do not even in the deepest valley of tears my adolescence would I fallen for this album. Instead of real emotion there is pathos, rather than musical heartache tough sound loops from Bassgeplucker and instead of a singer of fear and hatred of the soul cries out to a narrow-chested Geisterstimme without variation or volume.
"Unknown Pleasures" is not a bad album in the true sense, but it has about the same listening experience as the hum of the heater or raindrops on a tin roof: You registered it as a non unpleasant Beigeräusch, but after a few minutes you take it hardly note ,
