Customer Review

Love notebook buyers,
Here is the first full assessment for ASUS S56CM / A56CM Ultrabook.

-
Just FYI: I purchased the notebook as ASUS R505C in September in the media market without Bluetooth, and no boot SSD.
-

The following key points were my personal requirements:
1. Good workmanship (little plastic)
2. very thin (though graphics card)
3. decent performance (not a gamer notebook)
4. chic design (I hate Apple)
5. acceptable price (I'm student)

1. Processing:
There are not really many notebooks, which have such a good processing for such a price. My 'old' Acer is 100% made of cheap plastic, which has unfortunately been a negative result after a few weeks. I opened the notebook with one hand on the right side of the display. By bending that was created by the extremely cheap plastic, jumped my display. The Acer "people" thought I had a stone on the keyboard, and then it collapsed!?! Well, after one month long repairs, which cost 250, I got it back, but still broken [...]
The next notebook should therefore be a little more stable.
The ASUS S56 / A56 (R505C) has a surface of aluminum (Unibody), the display lid is made of high quality plastic which is very stable and chic for the thin of the lid, because this was ground in a black aluminum look. The display bezel around the screen is also 'just' plastic, but even this is well made and not reflected. The bottom of the notebook is also in turn made of plastic, which is also well made.
On the whole: For the price you can not grumble at the processing one.

2. Dimensions:
I like Ultrabooks really very good. They are very thin, and have partly still sufficient power. But with the price I am not satisfied and have not the money for it. Again, I found it. At just 21 mm it meets even the Ultrabook requirements from Intel. Even a video card is installed.

3. Power:
I am not a high-end gamers, but a few games I could not pass up. Also for movie and audio editing enough power should be available. So should be installed at least one Intel Core i5 processor and a good graphics card. Actually, there is more power for the price, but they are then almost 3 times as thick and have poorer processing. That's why I've been looking for a compromise, and I am once again arrived at the ASUS S56 / A56.

4. The Design:
Although I do not like Apple, I find the design of MacBooks, etc. not bad. But with MacOS I just can not do anything, and there is a lack of money. I have searched for notebooks, which mostly consist of shades of gray, so no bright colors. Furthermore, it should not be a high-gloss surface, as in 80% of all other laptops. Of course there were other notebooks in this category that would please me, but they have not then met my other requirements.

5. The price:
I would have liked for. As the new ASUS N56 notebook taken, but this would have exceeded my available budget. There are a lot of notebooks, meeting my requirements exactly, but since everything fails because of the price. For this reason, I was looking for the cheaper alternative. Since has this completely to my liking.

6. The display:
Pity that almost no notebook in this price range has a decent display. The brightness is set to * almost * the deepest level (about 200cd / m²) and mirroring reinforced this again. In the Intel graphics options, you can optimize the color values by setting the saturation to +15. But who is looking for a good display in this notebook, is unfortunately wrong here.

7 more points:
- The notebook battery lasts depending on usage between 1 through 6 'hours.
- The laptop is really very quiet under normal operation. In load it is a bit loud.
- The keyboard is very chic, the pressure point is not the best.
- The touchpad is very large, can be pressed on the entire surface and has meaningful gestures.

Positives:
- Processing
- Design
- Performance
- Touchpad
- Volume
- Drive

Neutral:
- Keyboard
- Large display frame

Negatives:
- Display

Notebookcheck has now also tested the ASUS S56, but the battery life cut in the test from very poor because it probably had a defective battery.

Who the display, or the power is not sufficient, which should pick up the better 'ASUS N56'
otherwise you do almost nothing wrong with this "Ultrabook". :)

************ UPDATE *************

The bad reviews this Ultrabooks come about only through the 'incompatible' Windows 8.
Those who have problems, should immediately contact the ASUS service and explain this, and pointed out that almost all owners with Windows 8 and the notebook have the problem and therefore free 'Windows 7' want.

Since I've installed Windows 7, I can not find these problems.

********** ********* Update end
