1) Previous Printer
My previous printer Canon MX715 has after 14 months, unfortunately, a print head damage (B200 message). Replacement incl. New original cartridges cost me 120 € and after 2 weeks I had problems again. Since I had neither the time nor the inclination to concern myself with it again, I will now use any Canon products more.
2) decision-making basis for the new printer
I use Synology NAS 212+, Fritz box 7390, 3 laptops (WinXP, Win7 and 8.1), IPad, IPhone. The printer should be connected to the wireless Firtzbox. During the period 03.04.-04.25.2014 the following printer came for me on the short list: HP 6210, 4410 Brother, Epson 3620th
I have used the following criteria:
2.1) Duplex ADF scanning and duplex printing for two-sided copying of documents without additional PC
# HP and Brother do not offer duplex ADF, at HP until 6220 for about 260
2.2) Duplex Scan on local storage to digitize my incoming mail, without restarting the computer
# It's hard to find this reliable information. HP apparently can scan directly to NAS / SMB, Brother, I could not figure it out. The Epson can not scan the network, however, the inserted SD card share on the local network. The funktioinert then reliably without starting the NAS.
2.3) Wi-Fi and AirPrint to print from laptops and Ipad / Iphone
# Can wahscheinlich all. For Epson, I can say that the unit starts reliably from standby via WLAN and after a definerbaren time goes into standby. My previous machine was unreliable. Also print cancel the unit is carried out and then he's back betreibsbereit and continues printing.
2.4) Low standby power consumption in order to not turn on the printer for occasional printing manually need (is in the next room) and avoid the head cleaning use much ink when switching
# Little difference
2.5) Good letter printing quality for A4 and envelopes, so for text and graphics or pictures smaller
# Little difference. The rear sheet feeder Epson works well to print envelopes separately from the normal paper tray. The Brother can print the only A3. The HP probably has the better photo quality.
2.6) housing processing, appearance and feel to be of reasonable quality
# At HP I do not like the cheap plastic look of the enclosure; the Brother looks tidy and visually in white from class, but the thin, moving parts are rickety. The Epson is respect. Housing quality in my opinion leader, but the design of the keys to my mind is a little colorful fall.
2.7) cost of purchasing up to 200 EUR
# Of Brother is the best
Episode printing costs, volume, pressure range, NFC, cloud printing, Photo print quality, smell, taste ;-) are rather unimportant for me and should be no outliers.
So I opted for the Epson.
3) Quality
3.1 Pressure
Letter printing looks very good, dries instantly and does not smudge.
Photo printing is well resolved, but the colors look a bit pale.
The printer is ready for operation and NOT !! constantly engaged in head cleaning and adjusting the likes much better than the Canon me.
Volume level is ok, neither quiet nor loud.
3.2 Scan
Quality is good, the CIS scanner is very quiet. ADF works well for two-sided scanning.
3.3. Service
Touchpad and device keys are super.
For the complete cessation of all options and the many possible parameters you are however a few hours working with the tips go perhaps brisk ;-)
4) Tips for setting up
4.1 WLAN
The printer asks when you first start using the DisplayMenu from some basic settings. The cartridge of the shrink-wrapped foil found, remove the marked film strips and place it into the print head from the top with a little pressure.
Automatic 1Knopf WPS integration into the wireless did not work with my Fritz box. Therefore, select the SSID on the Druckermenu and enter the WLAN password manually.
4.2 Laptop Installation
Download and install the latest printer driver from Epson. [...]
4.3 Print email
The Epson Connect Printer Setup program registers the printer Epson and assigns the printer its own email address. An email with installation at this Epson email address will be forwarded and printed by Epson on the printer.
Can on the [...]
a) should be set to, for example to the list of approved sender e-mail addresses to restrict to their own
b) to adapt the pre-defined email address of your printer as a separate [email protected]
c) the own email be deposited, which is then displayed on the device when you select the Scan to Cloud as a destination option. So that I can scan the device directly to my email address. The other options (Drop Box, Google,) I do not use, because the filename of the scanned file anyway still has to be processed and moved to the correct folder on my NAS.
Thus, can now be emailed for printing and e-mailed from the scanner to my mailbox an underlay.
4.4 Network settings of the printer
The web interface of the printer access (IP depends on the local IP assignment from): [...]
The default host name for the simplified network access adapt here: EPSON. In addition, IP and DNS set to Auto: [...]
Set the turn-off period for the Sleep Mode here: 10min

4.5 Scan to SD Card
The formatted SD card inserted into the SD card reader of the device.
At the device in the Setup menu> System Administration> Printer Settings> Storage device interface Select> File Sharing Wifi to allow the delete / move the scans from the laptop.
About the Windows Explorer a new Network Drive.
Path: \\ Epson \ MEMORY CARD
User: Administrator
Password: unless previously set differently
On the scanned files can be accessed through the Explorer, to move the scan files on the NAS and rename there.
I can now without the PC scan a document and store it later.
4.6 Default settings for scanning and copying
Default settings on your machine:
Setup> System Administration> scanner settings or copy settings
Here all standard parameters such as PDF / JPG, Resolution, 2seitig be eingesetellt etc. Scan to SD and Scan to Cloud.
In addition, 12 so-called presets Preset button + digit can be created using all the settings then press through to start.
I can now for all my applications load predefined parameters and start with two keys.
Now it's become a bit of detail. I guess my recession describes the essential points after a few hours of experience. Longevity I can not evaluate. The device works for my needs so far really good.
