Premium (HD) receiver with Blueray Burners

Panasonic DMR-BST800EG 3D Blu-ray recorder (500GB, 2x CI Plus, WiFi, Skype, 2x USB input) (Electronics)

Customer Review

I descend from a Kathrein UFS 922 (twin tuner, 500 GB hard drive) to come and so already of a high level. The Panasonic 800 is currently a unique combination of a powerful satellite twin tuner, a large 500 GB hard drive and a Blu-ray burner (not only players!). The so provides no other manufacturer except to buy a much more expensive high-end -Linux box, eg legend, but for which you need one week Einarbeitunsgzeit. Here, the Panasonic is even slightly smaller than the Kathrein (let alone with additional Blueray device). AV receiver or TV are therefore connected only to 1 HDMI cable and it is necessary only 1 power cord. Man avoids impenetrable cable-jumble and can this all-combi accommodate even in confined spaces. Except for the delicate silver coloring on the lower edge of the front panel of the Panasonic is completely black and has no bright trim, which might interfere with that. Who silver devices, unfortunately out of luck, because there is the Panasonic 800 only in black. The smaller brother with 320 GB hard drive and built-in WiFi without there but in silver (and black). The electronics is likely very similar otherwise, so the smaller brother is probably also a very good buy.

The installation of the Panasonic is very easy and technology gifted must not look great in the manual probably. The guide is printed and of course in German (English is also included). I have a single cable, which must be selected at the very beginning (1 click!) And after 20 minutes the transmitter are from 2 satellites (more than 3000) automatically in the receiver's memory. The OSD is clearly laid out, easy to read and most of the settings already set so that they fit for many users. Is cumbersome, that transmitter can be moved in the complete station list only individually (which takes when the transmitter from far back to front to) and can not be searched by name or initials. But you can sort by number and by Alphabet switch, which helps somewhat. By means of 4 potential own favorite lists you can, from the comprehensive than 3,000 stations complete list, create shorter and clearer lists of frequently seen television programs or radio programs, for example. This is quite simple and is very convenient. During the first use of the upper CI + slot did not recognize the inserted module. The next day the then worked flawlessly without even ever following error messages.

Remote
-------------
It is made of black plastic grade. The keys are well chosen by the size and have a precise pressure point. As a Blueray recorder and a set-top box can be operated and to some features of the TV can still be operated, it naturally has more keys than other devices. These are well grouped. See you in quickly. Fewer buttons would mean more deeply nested menus. Very pleasant also the long range is (in my case, 5m) that even if one does not target can be bridged without any problems directly to the Panasonic. That's when Kathrein not so well with many Linux precious boxes. I can summarize only recommend!

HD +
----
When switching from a receiver with CI slots (Kathrin UFS 922) on the Panasonic can be the CI module of HD + (the actual map but well) no longer use (is also explicitly on the module). You need a CI + module. This module gets the easiest and probably cheapest as a combination of HD + card and CI + module you. One must not use the included HD + card the same, but may do so if the old card is used up. The transmitters of HD + group, eg Sat1, RTL, ProSieben, Vox etc. you can watch even without card in SD quality. The Panasonic expects them high on HD. The result is very satisfactory. However, at original broadcast HD broadcasts that exist increasingly in private (in Internet there are beautiful compilations which broadcasts now SD and HD are) not approach the upscaled broadcasts. I think the image enhancement a grade. The restrictions to such problems not fast forward (skip advertising, etc.) are made of HD + and will not be charged to the receiver. But those who look more the current program and in the break brings his beer, so can handle even if it really is an impertinence.

It is handy that you can adjust the menu if you decrypted the consignment immediately on the recording or after standby. With HD + programs can be recorded, however, the highest 90 minutes after recording still play. After an error message comes (it can not Panasonic). This is extremely annoying as it thwarts the purpose of recording. HD + (in the original module) is worth so only for users, then watch the TV programs or shortly afterwards, when they are sent. Whoever handles so, what has. Of the HD + card The free stations as ARD HD, ZDF HD, etc. has not these limitations of course.

The HD + restrictions (recording can no longer be played, fast forward impossible etc.) bypass some users by not using the HD + card in the supplied original module, but in a Unicam (Deltacrypt) module. This is very popular, which you can read extensively in Amazon reviews. It works in Panasonic. Rarely, a short glitches. But the holding is very limited (the original module, I have no remarks). It now has the opportunity - which may not provide many other recorder - 1 HD + channels to watch, for example RTL HD, and the 2nd HD + channels, eg VOX HD, at the same time (even encrypted) record. HD + prevents yes only that 2 broadcasts to be decrypted simultaneously. In addition, you can watch recorded programs with Unicam, when you want, while also fast-forward.

Sky
----
I have tentatively my S02 card is inserted into a AlphaCrypt Light Module, which worked fine. Again, you can record 1 program and if you decrypted afterwards (which has actually no disadvantages) See another. The Unicam module everything should be possible with the new V13 card (as with the S02 card or see here under the category HD +). But I have not even tested because I do not have the V13 card.

Unicam and Alphacrypt in practical operation
---------------------------------------

There are the two most popular modules bulky material on the Internet. It can be summarized based on the Panasonic so.

Both cards (HD + and Sky; the Panasonic has 2 CI + slots for 2 modules) was the authentication at startup very quickly and usually without any messages (which delay the start briefly). As the Kathrein is already problematic. It may be that the Unicam (chip the HD + card must be up) or Alphacrapt does not work immediately at the very first insertion of the module into the CI + slot. It then switches repeatedly on and off or leaves the map overnight there and switched the next day again a. Then it goes. It must be stated also that newly selected HD + or Sky channels need a prolonged first authentication decryption. So do not panic if briefly the error message that no module is inserted. If one selects the same channels at the 2nd time, it works. The switching effect low for longer than the original HD + module and can occur in rare cases, to short dropouts with the Unicam. That was the original HD + card in several weeks never the case.

It is striking that disorders of the map in the lower CI + slot are particularly rare and when a module does not want to run at the beginning, one uses it in the lower bay. Then it works.

Picture and sound quality TV tuner
----------------------------
For HD movies very good coloration and sharpness of the image with color-faithful reproduction and good black levels. Of course, absolutely noise-free. Attached was a high-end plasma TV from Samsung with 160cm diagonal, PS63C7790YSXZG. The picture looked a little sharper than the already very good Kathrein UFS 922. The reception of SD channels offered a very good picture. The Panasonic scales the images very well on "pseudo-HD" high. The tone seemed even more plastic and more balanced than at Kathrein. Attached was to a high-end AV receiver Yamaha RX-V 2067 and B & W speakers with subwoofer.

Blue Ray
------
In the front flap of Blueray shaft is significantly more cut than necessary. This bothers not so, since everything is in black and looking at the wide recess not as looks. But thought is not.
Readout time is quite fast and is above the average until the Blueray starts. The drive is quiet and no longer audible at 1m distance. The output level of Blueray and satellite tuner is naturally matched without volume jump. Overall, the output level is slightly higher (the device is thus somewhat "louder") as the Kathrein UFS 922nd
The image quality of the player is great, including 3D. Has been tested with "Avatar".
A Blueray burner is to have exclusively at Panasonic (except for a few precious Linux receivers that cost considerably more). When burning the drive noise is louder than when you play, but bearable. Broadcast in SD of 2 hours 6 minutes (Platinum 25GByte, speed x4) burned, what can be described as fast. Before that, the blank has to be formatted what happened in 1 minute. When finalized the Blueray, you can watch the content on other players than a Panasonic, Samsung BD-C6900, for example. Copies will always from the hard drive to the Blue-ray, which is very simple.

Wifi
----

Unlike the smaller devices with WLAN is installed. With an 8m away standing FritzBox 7390 and between befindlicher wall trouble-connection is possible. I looked about YouTube videos on the Internet. That goes without hesitation in the picture. But surfing has just no proper keyboard. I do not need any more than access via the Internet with information about movies or the evening news. I want nothing to stream to the receiver. When I put forward my USB flash drive with photos comfortably and look at this. That goes smoothly.

-----
Conclusion:
-----
Impressive combination of Blueray burner, 500 GB hard drive and Twin-SAT-Receiver (einkabelfähig) with excellent picture and sound quality, very good remote control and quiet operation noise. The device for people who want to see with top quality TV and Blueray and dislike the "Gebastele" the high-end Linux boxes. That now (restrictive) CI + slots instead of CI slots were installed, is not a problem.

Wish I would have:

-Faster and easier sorting way the station list (although this rarely makes it)
Display the time, even during operation

A special highlight:

Simultaneous recording and watching a 2nd HD + or Sky transmitter possible

PS: In summer, a successor whose data is not yet known out. In any case, it should have a 1TByte disk.
