After some trial and error with my smartphone as a recording device and the subsequent mapping of spatial data with the program Geosetter (freeware), I realized quickly that I had no desire for the subsequent tinkering at my pictures. So I went in search of a GPS receiver for my Canon EOS 700D. The selection is not as soo huge, even if it is in the last year has become a bit more.
Here come the following product in question for my camera:
- Original Canon GP-E2 GPS Receiver
- Solmeta Geotagger Pro2 EOS
- Marrex MX-G10M DSLR Camera GPS Receiver for Canon
- Marrex Marrex MX-G10 GPS receiver (the little brother without display)
Since the Canon is as short as 250 and the Solmeta in scarce 200, separated the two "times to test" from.
Since I did not want to do without a display fell my choice on the Marrex MX-G10M GPS receiver. The have for for almost 120. A price I was willing to pay.
UNPACKING:
The receiver was neatly packed. In the box was the receiver, a connection cable to the camera, a small rope loop to attach the receiver, if it is not to be installed in the hot shoe, a quick start guide (in English), a warranty card and a commercially available Micro-USB charging cable. The connecting cable to the camera seems to be a mini-USB to mini-USB. Whether it's specially wired I do not know.
The receiver product and accessories to make a solid impression Sehl and also during the subsequent operation, there was so far no disturbance.
OPERATION:
The two USB ports are on the left side of the receiver for charging and connecting to the camera. On the right side there are three round rubber buttons that are used for operation.
Pressing the first button (on / off) a little longer, so the receiver let on and off. If the device is on, so it can the on / off button and the second button (M) in the menu backwards and forwards are hergescrollt. To change the setting of the currently displayed menu item, the last button is used (S). It is operated in English and is clear and comprehensible. Of course, that's not a touch screen and sometimes squashed you look sometimes, but honestly - after the receiver is set as you need it to only expresses probably on and off.
FUNCTION:
After I made my first expereience for geotagging with my smartphone and the smartphone to determine location needed 2-3 minutes, I was totally perplexed that the Marrex already informed me about 20-30 seconds after power, that he has my point found , In addition, an electronic compass is installed, the "line of sight" displays immediately after switching on. Already excited by the main function I found out that there is also the possibility to write a log file and thus record the entire route or later to use the data also for another camera. As file name, the current date is used. If the receiver is switched off in the meantime, the data is appended to the existing file. In the instructions I had not seen this feature ...
In addition to the impeccable function of Geotaggens allows the display at predetermined intervals Blanking, or activate the standby mode.
CONNECTION AND USE
After me, the first dry inserts already so enthusiastic I have the receiver connected to the camera, which has then recognized these errors. In the camera menu, location information of the receiver can then be displayed. The weight is very low and since I use my camera with an extra battery grip it at all does not fall actually significant.
GEO-DATA
As geo-data the GPS coordinates as well as the viewing direction are written in the Exif function. With the latter, I would not have expected when buying, but after I had seen the compass feature of the unit I naturally looked forward also on the implementation.
CONCLUSION
The unit is solid and does what it should. So a clear plus.
The only negative thing I found was the shape of the camera cable. With a Nikon receiver I saw a coiled cable that is not the extent protrudes when connecting the camera. But that's about it!
Since I've bought the MX-G10M on suspicion (I've found no review), I hope I can make a buying decision easier some undecided with this report. Now I have not taken care of the two competitors, and now do not know if that can do more. But I also do not miss anything and so iches'll leave based on himself.
