I had the same attachment to read external drives laptop, but USB 2. The problem is that an external SSD read in USB 2 provides only 40MB / second!
With this product, I go to 169 MB a second, which is acceptable. Note that this approach to the internal SSD 490 MB second ... Tests performed on Linux with hdparm.
