The recording is 'classic' jazz - I would call it - more intellectual nature in its purest form. The band of trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, piano, bass and drums plays razor-sharp and highly professional. The arrangements are sophisticated, but without too complicated to sound. Evans sings with good, controlled, technically clean voice, which is of course the natural sound, the vocal power and the presence of any of the very 'big' voices of jazz.
Seen in a very successful, professional production that will satisfy all lovers of clean, high-quality craftsmanship and jazz singing happy five stars deserved. I forgive all four subjective, because I lack the last bit of me and the cleanliness and precision a tick must be sterile and intellectually. The booklet writes, Evans had a "cool expression" - that is true, but something to me or to one side 'cool'. Next it writes of a "wide spectrum of vocal dynamics" - that's true in some ways, but this is the whole on more reduced, restrained from Level. It is the 'momentum' of Haydn sonata of Bach's piano or wohltermperierten that analyisiert the musically trained ear and recognizes not the friend of jazz singing, which is rather Musiklaie. Finally, the booklet writes of their "emotional honesty" - that's true in the sense that the emotions of a human being at the end of the day (if one is honest with) are usually simple and banal. This comes over and may also be interested in and touch a little. But I lack that little bit of 'lie' and exaggeration that the real life makes for colorful, livelier and more livable.
Throughout figuratively speaking a beautifully-made designer fruit bowl made of polished stainless steel. Looks great in the long run harmonize the bananas and apples but for me but better with a more vivid wooden bowl. Who does not see it, is well served by this CD here; who it feels even so, will not be disappointed, but they have on the purchase list and not at the top.
