The title of the book (Hacker's Guide) is the author's picture: pretentious. This book is certainly not a guide, just a compilation of various information.
Beyond the rather peremptory tone of the author, which, to be sure, has a very high regard for him, this book is poorly structured, with chapters without interest (what if your PC does not work anymore!) And is exceeded. It deals eg WEP but absolutely not speak WPA.
If you want to explore the concept of hacking, I can only recommend the book "Basics of hacking" Patrick Engebretson, also in PEARSON. The interesting little book of Eric Charton is present in the book of Patrick Engebreston. But this last book you learn a lot more. Engebretson Patrick was also a lot less pretentious prose and does not spend his time explaining that you are a "LAMER". And it gives you a very interesting deepening tracks.
For the Hacker's Guide, I will write in conclusion: Money spent to no purpose.
