My Opinion:
"Afterworld" ties in with the events of "Angel Falls" to. We slip back into the role of Penryn. Penryn survived the attack of the Scorpion fetuses and no longer only has to fight against the angels, provide the ever-expanding intellectual Abtriften her mother and the resistance, but also the fact that her sister Paige was done horrible and never again will be the little seven year old that she was before her abduction. Here, fear, disgust and love mix in her and she is constantly in conflict of their feelings. The author had inspired me with their intense narrative style in the first part and here she manages that one sympathizes with Penryn, she understands her fears and hopes. The protagonist remains completely sympathetic. I can not say why, but Penryn is for me one of the best dystopia characters I know. I think if you would look at them from the perspective of an authorial narrator, it would perhaps be tough over, but through the first-person perspective, we learn all their fears, concerns and needs and be able to witness how they repeatedly internal struggles with themselves is fighting. And not always they can react to the outside as they would have it gladly. She's just a very, familliƤre by their situation, embossed person.
The mood that was already pretty bleak in Angel Falls is again topped in this band a lot. I found the atmosphere, as well viellerlei scenes nahzu horror-heavy. This much blood flows and it is not made before torn body parts and cannibalism halt. The descriptions of Paige's scars and "changes" go deep and are partly disturbing, as is the story around their origination. We learn in the second part a bit more about Paige's fate, but still not all. The storyline around the Scorpion / locusts is not for the squeamish. All this is not for everyone. I myself am not a horror or splatter fan, but my tension has completely carried away and made the book a page turner. I could find no offense.
Let's talk about the thing that bothered me a bit: Raffe was missing. Although the author has found a really imaginative, creative way to let him be physically present despite physical absence (I really want to continue to betray nothing, because I would otherwise extremely spoilers), so have my snappy, sarcastic and often humorous discussion between him and Penryn missing. Luckily we do not have to leave it, because, if I may tell which, after about 2/3 of the book, their paths cross again. Therefore, there is only half a spring deduction from me.
This book ends with a cliffhanger, but it is not nearly as hard as in the first part. The third volume will luckily already in June this year. So we no longer have to wait quite so long :)
Conclusion: A truly successful sequel with a wonderful protagonist. The mood and the setting are very grim, bloody and creepy, not for the squeamish. Rated 14 is really appropriate. For any fan of Angel Falls is a must and worth!
