First of all, I have retrofitted after two weeks with a 2 GB RAM module and I can only agree with the previous speakers in this respect: It is definitely worthwhile. At this point the way, my thanks to Armin Schwelm for the recommendation of a compatible tie and the instructions for installation, which has saved me a lot of research.
Now the product:
Fields of application are mainly transcripts in seminars, surfing and searching on the Internet, more rarely watching videos and playing minigames.
First, the positive properties:
- Among the most striking and impressive features include battery life for me. For continuous load on Word and Firefox (screen constantly on) all 7.5 hours of battery life.
- The matte display 'I think mandatory, especially for mobile computers
- The screen brightness can be adjusted very strong, on the lowest level but you can usually still see enough. Highest level is really very bright
- Extremely quiet, you can hear the fan noise only in the immediate vicinity or in absolute peace (The only slightly clearer vernehmendes noise is the startup disk)
- Reliable, sensitive touchpad
- Keyboard with relatively large keys, easy to operate, one of the most watched problems for smaller laptops. The keys also have a good tactile feedback.
- The weight is extremely low, most of the books I mitschleppe weighing more
- Windows boot time. About 25 seconds before entering a password, what comes next depends on the program
- Wireless Receiver is very powerful, I have a much better connection at some distance from the router as eg WLAN-Sticks
Now for the negative points:
- What's really a small drawback is that the netbook with HD videos and 'films to its knees. Up to a resolution of 720p everything out but no longer runs smoothly and well, it. This is so far no matter when a higher resolution anyway exceed the screen resolution of the device and thus would be completely useless, but regrettable, that it is not easy to play movies in a lower quality. Look on the other side, Blue-Rays should anyway be difficult and quite bleak with the little one, a 10 inch screen is now not even the world
- The speakers are not really useful, the tones sound about as played from the mobile phone and too loud can also play it from turning. So if you start applications require sound, I recommend the use of headphones.
All other negative points I run though, since they are worth knowing, but they do not flow into consideration when evaluating a because these problems were foreseen and are not to be Paul Ehrlich Institute therefore:
- The speed. I think at the buzzwords single-core processor and 1.66 GHz does not have to be rocket physicist to think that the netbook can be thus win a marathon computing. And one or two GB Ram not just bring the whole logically to the speed of light. However, I must say that I have no problems with the calculation speed, all applications load within a few seconds, the browser, it can sometimes take a little longer, but usually not. The only thing that bothers is the time to clamp a new USB mass storage media for the first time to the device. Since you do prefer in the meantime a coffee, or you have him then.
- Games can be basically do not play on the netbook, as already mentioned, I have some mini-games on my but 'proper' games should not even try it
- Hard disk capacity also is not just the force, the whole thing is just not designed to program big or large volumes of data, I do not know what you should accomplish great with more memory. By the way does not seem to me the Amazon description here to be correct: I have on my book not a 250GB hard drive, but two large 125GB. When has any reason behind the I please I am not yet come to improve.
Conclusion: If you go with the right expectations of buying this netbook, and that's just not the best performance values, but rather a small, handy Arbeitshelferlein for Office applications and the like, which will certainly not be disappointed with this product. The value for money is unbeatable for what you get and the battery life a hammer. In the year that I use the product now almost daily, it never came to problems or even crashes.
Finally, two recommendations: to push the performance a little without the power consumption to drive unnecessarily high energy, I recommend setting to 'High Performance' to set, then as far as possible down the screen brightness. Compared to the setting 'Balanced' lose so maybe half an hour battery life, but the performance improved markedly and many applications go a little faster by equip.
Second, one should as far as possible look for a resource saving anti-virus program, the reasons are obvious: The more power is needed the program, the less for further applications
From me there is at this point a very strong buy recommendation, since I am at any point really disappointed with the product!
PS: Do you previously better smart about the stripped-down Windows 7 Starter Edition. Otherwise unsightly surprises could emerge, I do not happen, but nevertheless'
