On the other hand shows us Rickman (as in other novels), the mesh of unpunished guilt concealed misery and extreme xenophobia, of which the lives and actions of people is determined in the English village milieu. The real evil is no external force, but resides in the actions of the man himself-a conclusion to which the Anglican "exorcist" Merrily Watkins keeps coming back.
Not to mention the mystical atmosphere and the light touch of some Gothic characters that make the book readable only.
Not only readers of the black guild will be delighted ...
