I loved this book! While being funny and light, it actually raises excellent questions and shows us the absurdity of the world in all innocence. It all begins when two neighbors who have never spoken are found in their stairwell. One, a little naive, asks the other what it means to be Jewish because he wanted to explain to his wife, which seems rather early Semitic. The other is really annoying because if it is well recognized as a Jew, it is nevertheless an atheist, he never made the Sabbath, He eats pork and he did not marry a Jewish woman. This absurd dialogue in many ways signigie demystifies what being Jewish for many, because as recalled by the author at the end, there are thousands of ways of being Jewish, none is better, none more genuine, they are just different, as human beings. Finally we can be what we want and demand the right to be in peace without being judged by others. I loved this book! Thank you to Jean-Claude Grumberg these funny and intelligent dialogues that make us think without giving us any preconceived answer! To put in all hands! Whether one is interested or not by the question of being Jewish, because basically the same questions may apply to all!
