The player looks good, plays virtually all major media formats, has WiFi connectivity and a rather appealing GUI. However, many things are not meant to end:
Why can not I just create a media library, when I pull the media from a drive or HDD and not when I streame of a NAS? That to me is in itself a KO criterion, because that should be a modern media player have been on it. Will indeed why not even begin with the "double record keeping" and constantly back and strutting files between NAS and embroidery. There had to be a solution, and after days of study relevant forums I had the solution: NFS-stream (not the Monkey server) and it should be possible to place the Media Library on the NAS. But Nanu, the player offered the option not even on. Funny, if available in the manual if you look closely. So still played around and found that it actually goes with the penultimate firmware version before the current. Why in the world has allowed the fall again with the newer firmware versions? And then you have to stick to the old firmware version forever? Sorry, but that is not at all.
But that bad surely that is not because:
Despite media library it's actually impossible to create a simple playlist on the device. For this you have a PC and then try to create with appropriate third-party software and store it in a playlist of NAS music directory folder. Toll. cumbersome not go well! Furthermore, it is not possible to create a playlist on the fly, ie to select songs to put on hold, where they are then played in sequence. The "hold" while there are (but only in conjunction with the Media Bibliothekt - why ??), but if you extend this as she is playing, the newly added songs are not played? huh? Who thinks because of that? (= Old on hold listening to the end and then create a new one)
Those were two KO criteria ultimately for me and so I am sending the item back. The fact that the remote control is terribly vague and the GUI would sometimes lagged for me now have no reason to give up the part, but you should know that and include in its considerations. In addition, the WiFi receiver does not seem to be the best. My Apple TV shows at the same location at 100% percent receiving, where the WD only about 70% indicated.
Conclusion: if you do not have high expectations, the thing is in order. For "advanced" it is not really recommended but. Because there is in my opinion currently nothing better than a gejailbreaktes ATV2 along with NAS and XMBC (at least for relatively narrow money). Capable of almost anything, but is probably not for everyone, because the configuration is a bit tricky.
Among the features "pictures" or "Videos" I can only say that it works. In the depths I have not entered because I bought the WD Live mainly due to the music feature. What, however, I noticed among the other offerings, such as the media market or max cathedral Videothekt:. The picture quality can not compete with those in the iTunes store. However, it could also have been because I have looked at only free trailer.
+ Price
+ Optics
+ Image quality
+ Plays virtually all formats
- Significant weaknesses in detail (see above)
- Remote control with very spongy pressure point (a better app on your mobile phone)
- Something lurking WiFi
o GUI (not bad, but the folder view is a bit antiquated. Sometimes slow)
