So I needed a second flash unit that speaks iTTL. The performance did not necessarily have to be as high as that of the no longer available SB-800th In addition, it was also a question of the purchase price because Nikon's flagship SB-910 is currently at about 370 euros.
After I had looked at models of some effective third party, I am then again landed at Nikon. The Nikon flashes make me a higher quality impression. The mere possibility of the quick attachment to the camera pleases me always anew.
I am however not decided on the top model SB-910, but for the more favorable SB-700. In the hands of works SB-700 compact than the two models mentioned above. The display is slightly smaller than the larger, but clearly met, so it is sufficient completely.
Also, the supplied cubic seemingly soft bag is different from the old bags. It makes it possible to pack the flash in the bent state, including the supplied correction filters for artistic and neon light and the flash foot. Unlike the previous models of Nikon these filter papers are now made of hard plastic and can be plugged.
A fold scattering and reflector disc is Nikon-like integrated in the head and a Flash Diffuser for fitting is included.
It is striking in comparison with the SB-800 and similar devices that anyone has ever given the device a slide switch for the basic setting mode and illumination. That is far-use than the old models. It is also convenient that an on / off rotary switch has been installed. This also serves to set the Master / Remote functionality. The revised operating concept of the new Nikon Speedlights is well thought out and seems very successful.
With a guide number of 38 of enlightening friend is far below the performance of my old SB-800th But the SB-700 is intended for use in combination with the 24-70mm. Since the freedmen light enough in any case to illuminate the shaking hands of the Mayor with the guest of honor.
The time until the flash is ready for use, is part of Nikon given as 2.5 seconds. Although I have used no stopwatch, but my sense of time tells me that this is true in some. Time is of course dependent on the lightning power used. So you need not insert 2.5 seconds pause between the respective snapshots. I have always used as four times Sanyo Eneloop AA.
Topic flash mode
I would now not explain the complete flash modes in detail, but only the features that are noticed in connection.
TTL / TTL BL a free choice of these two possibilities does not provide the flash. This is dependent on the setting of the camera exposure metering. Fill flash TTL BL It is just going on in fact, by changing the exposure setting of the camera. In matrix and center-weighted metering of SB 700 TTL BL selects autonomously. Only when spot metering it automatically switches to TTL mode. Switching on the SB-700 itself is not possible. A disadvantage due to this inability so far I could not discover in my purpose.
M here I want to emphasize that the lightning in its flash output from 1/1 to 1/128 can be set. This is a gift that I have come to appreciate in different situations when the SB-800 and SB-80DX. Many other flash units, even in this class can only be set in its gross flash output.
For this, a definite plus.
FP - an explicit adjustment for the high-speed sync FP does not exist. That does not mean that high shutter speeds with flash are not possible, because the SB-700 automatically switches to when the shutter speed is faster than the flash synchronization speed of the camera. I tested this with the D700 and there were times to 1 / 8000s problem.
A word of advice - if you need a wired flash synchronization, the SB-700 has a disadvantage because it is fitted to this equipment no connections that make this right.
Conclusion:
Given the scope of services and the quality supplied fits the price / performance ratio with the Nikon SB-700. I find nothing I could blame the equipment to the detriment. Clearly, the SB-700 can not do everything, what can higher flashes. But he is also a fair bit cheaper than this.
Only the manual would be a reason easy to lift the eyebrows, because that is completely in Dutch, which can occur when EU goods but times.
All in all, saw a highly recommended piece!
