This telephoto got myself to my D40 kit here for 140 incl. shipping.
The pictures are absolutely great for the price range, the mechanics (AF) works audible but very focused fix. Nix rattles, it has good haptics despite plastic housing, no merkbares game in the moving parts. It works with value and feels good in use and also has its weight.
The adjustment rings can be easily operated and run clean.
It just makes me enjoy it to "work"!
The zoom ratio ranging from absolute for me.
Sure, it's relatively dim with 4-5.6, hence the cheap price.
I am very satisfied, it is preferable 70-300 definitely the Tamron !!!
Only the nice gimmick "macro" should not be taken so seriously.
Full Frame insect is caught, of course not. Therefor you need a magnification ratio of 1: 1 / at least 1: 2.
However, the minimum distance is reduced in the range 200-300 with activated macro switch of about 1.5m to 1m, so you can make sharp up to 1m yet. Thus one can make Close-Ups, but that has nothing to do with macro.
For the macro range I got myself even a used Cosina 100mm prime lens macro manual focus.
So I have covered only times everything except full wide-angle (12-16mm).
Long story short:
Exactly what I expected.
