First, there is the new sound: The relatively flat and partly diffuse, swampy sound of the original "The Song Remains The Same" album has given way to a fantastic transparent, rich, warm sound. Guitar, bass and John Bonham's drums come in bold, powerful and clear, and are compared to Robert Plant's vocals in the mix adequately positioned. It sounds like a brand new album!
But the real highlight is the 6 extra songs that did not make it on the original vinyl double album 1976:
- "Black Dog"
- "Over The Hills And Far Away"
- "Since I've been loving you"
- "Misty Mountain Hop"
- "The Ocean"
- "Heartbreaker"
All excellent versions, "Heartbreaker", "The Ocean" and "Over The Hills And Far Away" are my favorites. Hard to believe that these songs were at that time (1976) is not the same as published (they would have to make a triple album.).
The CDs are beautifully packaged in high quality digipack with a new booklet, liner notes and various photos from the film.
The old TSRTS album but you should not dispose of, because in some songs that are included on both the old as well as the new album, it still is not identical versions. Thus, for example "Whole Lotta Love" or "No Quarter" in different parts (especially by other cuts). Personally, I think that's great, because this (and the new extra songs) reaches a new, additional live album has been created, and not just a remix of the original.
Addendum: FYI for LZ-beginners, this live album includes the best version of Stairway to Heaven, which was ever officially released (even better than the studio version on Mothership), the guitar solo by Jimmy Page is completely above ground.
