This focus on the specific skills of atypical CEO is the main topic of the book. The author, W.Thorndike, from eight case studies of these exceptional managers who have managed outside the box by making capital allocation decisions, and ultimately rewarded their shareholders with excellent return on the long term. These CEOs needed for it a different mindset from that taught in most business schools, and have been able to ignore the institutional imperative (the latter quality besides being one of those attributes that Buffett with good leaders.
Rather than focus on daily operational management, they left considerable autonomy to their teams and business units (extreme decentralization, few staff in the headquarter etc.). In contrast, capital allocation decisions were for their main task of the CEO and the decisions to his hand (extreme centralization).
A careful reading of this book will help you better identify the current CEO who share the same mindset that successful managers presented in the book, and can therefore help you as an investor.
