What convinced me to buy this book, the idea of the divine offspring, and without a doubt, the last sentence in the Kurbeschreibung was: "But If They think she'll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy ..."
The story of Nikki who learns unexpectedly that she is a descendant of a goddess and her way to find your way in this new world, I found really good. The author also manages one to make the protagonist sympathetic with all its weaknesses. Something other than the gods relationship, I felt as different, and that in a positive sense, as the typical heroines, which can be found in the urban fantasy series. The skepticism that it creates the day, the knowledge of human nature and this self-confidence, what other authors also try to manifest in their characters, but sometimes fail - it was here. It remains to be seen how it develops, the more the series goes. For this even the supporting characters such as Blake, who is a descendant of eros, or Jamaal, which in turn is derived from Kali, everyone was so sophisticated and imaginative design that there was a certain something the whole story.
The only thing I have to complain about in this otherwise really good successful debut in this new series is that it was here and there a bit lengthy. The author has at times so absorbed in her protagonist, that you the suspense flew out of his hands. I eventually did not know what the book actually comes down, as it was started a bit of everything. That after everything converged, was unfortunately shown little bumpy.
For this, the end ended up being surprisingly. Mainly because a secret comes to light what is actually obviously, although it is not concluded and you wonder why you have not previously thought about. And that's something that Ms. Black has done really well.

All in all, Dark Descendant a really good, entertaining book that I can recommend without a doubt. The sequel will be released in April 2012:
Deadly Descendant
