Should Phil Rickman believed, the aforementioned Mr. in so enlightened 20th century drives diligently to mischief-namely in the middle of the church, where else are least expected him. But who wants to read this novel only as a mystery thriller, also comes fully at its expense. The author skillfully combines elements of pre-Christian religions with principles of medieval demon magic and individual aspects of the New Age movement, which began in the sixties of the previous century, in parallel with the return of black magic groupings.
The result is a toxic brew, where the main character, the official "exorcist" Merrily Watkins, almost broken. More is at this point not be revealed, except that it is a very readable novel that I recommend to all mystery fans warmly.
