This flash looked on paper from real promising, unfortunately it is not in practice.
Positives:
+ Clear display
+ Many functions
+ High guide number
+ Reflector
+ Second Flash
+ Master & Slave capability
+ Works well and reliably in manual mode
+ In ETTL mode and manual mode works the control over the camera
+ Removable battery magazine
+ Reasonable compared to Canon Speedlights
Neutral:
* There is a USB port for firmware upgrades. That sounds like a cool feature. In practice, however, it brings even nix, because there are no upgrade for this flash, though it is already a few years on the market.
Negatives:
- The flash does not recognize the crop factor correctly (unlike the 430 EX II) and therefore I get in ETTL / automatic mode significantly poorer results than the Canon flash. This could be controlled presumably by a firmware upgrade
- Some functions are indeed displayed on the camera display, but settings are not applied there (example: Stroposkop flash). This is a bit confusing. For example, if I set the Stroposkop frequency changes the flash again in the ETTL mode and leaves the Stroposkop mode. Here it would be better either to allow the setting or the option not to display on the screen.
- The flash does nasty Fiep- & crackling. I have received 2 units of Amazon, both make really annoying sounds once they are on. Even if the display is off, the sounds remain. (By comparison, the 430 EX II makes no noise except the Zoom). Sometimes the sound is so high frequency that one 1st in 2m distance still hear him and 2. I get headaches over time. These noises are annoying and unnecessary especially in quiet environments.
Conclusion: If only would the crop factor problem, I would probably keep him. However, the sounds for me have a knock-out criterion, which is why I am afraid to return the flash.
I'll be watching now alternative from Metz and Yognuo. Possibly have something more useful. Nissin may feel free to contact if they have solved the noise problem without the flash would have a high potential.
