Now the Drobo Mini:
The concept sounds great and I was very excited for my Mac with Thunderbolt I was looking for a fast external storage solution. I have stocked the Drobo with two Samsung SSD (256 and 500GB). Later still came the "accelerator" a Sandisk XS110 256GB mSATA with.
What I gefälllt:
The design, the processing, the Dashboard software are as usual very good and met my expectations. For two stars. The onset of drives without carriage is a dream.
What really disappointed me:
1) The performance at the Thunderbolt port is underground! Despite two SSD I came during the file transfer at rates of 30-100 MB / s when reading and writing. A big disappointment for an SSD RAID array, I also do not know that there is to go wrong if you measure the:.. (MacMini with Intel SSD and Thunderbolt connected directly to the MacMini The results were also similar with Xbench The Inter SSD of MacMini reached a score of 276, the Drobo Mini 67. The Drobo Mini USB2.0 over a score of 40. I would have hoped, with the possibilities of Thunderboltschnittstelle, the external SSD can achieve similar speeds as the internal (goes with other Drives that too !!).
The performance problems are the DroboMini, shows that are to achieve the same setup on Thunderbolt with the LaCie 5big RAID over 700 MB / s (and there potter in Raid0 5 conventional hard disks, no SSDS). I realize that in no Raid0 Drobo is running, but the speeds achieved are too low for the price anyway.
2) The accelerator board has in mind, of course, nothing has changed since the data rates of the internal SSDs were far from being exhausted. It may be that the mSSD card something brings with hard disks, in my configuration completely useless, because storage is also not count the total quota, but can only serve as a cache.
3) The fan and heat generation are the biggest nuisance. Since you have installed completely silent SSD and the two mini-fans roar louder than the fan of big Drobo, more than a conventional PC. Really uncomfortably loud. And despite the fan the Drobo at the bottom is red hot. And that, even though the power supply is external. After all, the external power supply is relatively compact. By the fan DroboMini is not in the workspace can be used, and because it has no Ethernet connection,
Bottom line: If I'm looking for a backup solution, which is not so much a matter of performance I take the big Drobo, since I can neatly get space. If I need a fast Thunderbolt countertop, I take a different solution. The DroboMini for me so unfortunately a complete failure. Why is merely fallen from 700 to 250 euros the price?
