This volume contains episodes 1-5 of the series "Superior Spider-Man", published in 2013. The screenplay is by Dan Slott, drawings and inking Ryan Stegman for episodes 1-3, Guiseppe Camuncoli (inked by John Dell) for episodes 4 & 5.
The story begins as the Sinister Six supercriminels group is robbing a bank. It consists of Boomerang, Overdrive, Shocker, Speed Demon, Living Brain and Beetle. Spider-Man appears and confronts them. The fight against Speed Demon turning to his disadvantage, he decided to leave everything and plan. He still returns to save a policeman and uses his fingers to scratch until they bleed Boomerang. He asked the police to ensure that the robot is delivered to the laboratories Horizon (which works one Peter Parker). Once delivered, Parker is working on a project unknown, refusing the help of his colleagues and his boss rabrouant. He gets a call from Mary-Jane who offered him dinner together at a restaurant. On the spot he admires her cleavage and explains the tactics he has developed to make the Sinister Six hand in the bag. Sign that times are changing: even J. Jonah Jameson (New York Mayor) estimates that Spider-Man has finally become a constructive and positive individual to society.
In the previous volume, Dan Slott introduced a radical change in the status quo of the Spider-Man character since the mind and soul of Peter Parker were ejected from his body and that of his enemies always took possession. While Peter's soul is disembodied and perhaps did not survive, the reader is invited to discover the new Spider-Man in a new series whose title proclaims "superior". The volume begins with a cliché: the supercriminels who prey to a bank. But before you can yawn, the reader discovers the upper Spider-Man (with some discrete adjustments to the blue and red suit) and its working methods. One of the main interests of the narrative will be a comparison between the new and the old, both in civilian life and superhero life. From the point of view of narrative techniques, Slott does not use the thoughts of bubbles, but the 2 main characters are willing to review their actions out loud from beginning to end. If this device is artificial, it perfectly achieved its goal of bringing the characters drive.
After this first scene too cliche to be interesting, the reader discovers the new Spider-Man, and the new Peter Parker. There is no doubt in his mind that the series will return one day or another the status quo and can therefore enjoy this getaway while it lasts. Slott Master about it and can afford to meet the expectations of the reader, while the surprising. The new Spider-Man he will respect the old brand? Will he on the side of good or evil? Will he commit irreparable acts as a stain forever Spider-Man's reputation, or Peter Parker? Will it take advantage of the situation to conclude with Mary-Jane think that Peter the real deal? And, quite simply, he will live up to the deeds of the real Spider-Man?
On one hand, the reader can have fun to see Dan Slott tease with the more or less tricks. He does it with panache and scenes read quickly, bringing a good level of entertainment. On the other, the reader may say that it is not open to great consequence, and that is a superhero story just a little more clever than others. Ryan Stegman done personal work very pleasing to the eye. It is possible to distinguish several influences ranging from Humberto Ramos Todd McFarlane, for very modern boards with a swinging atmosphere between good-comedy and clashes made darker by a fairly steady inking. Guiseppe Camuncoli has a style less influenced by manga with a slower inking, but an approach to staging equally vibrant. He has already designed several previous episodes of the series "Amazing Spider-Man" as well as more episodes of Hellblazer (John Constantine made an unofficial appearance page 4 episode 5, the time of one).
Once past the first 4 episodes, the player said that this iteration of Spider-Man's nice to read, very entertaining, good superhero comics. In episode 5, he realized that Dan Slott can also prove excellent. In a more delicate operation, the new Spider-Man shows better in every way than its predecessor, starting with its strategy. The reader remains in awe of this superiority demonstration that combines planning, strong character without being perfect, action settled the millimeter and relentless suspense. The drawings of Camuncoli are up this black history, dangerous and cynical. Perfect.
Regular readers of the series will feel offended that his favorite character is the victim of an identity theft up to install a new character instead of the holder, and still in his suit. Knowingly, the new drive (or casual) will appreciate this fresh wind blowing in the series. The former will also be able to take pleasure in this transient interlude. Dan Slott is very clever in the way he plays with readers' expectations and completed his first volume on a clear rationale and without appeal of the adjective "top". It has a good design team has enough personality and expertise to not simply replicate the usual images related weaver.
